I tried checking a new set (new to me) of old foundations and there was quite a bit of evidence of former detecting...probably old and also new as the dirt was still disturbed. The area is loaded with a lot of old metal. I, like other detectorists, laid many of the finds in strategic locations near the site. There were many broken bottles, metal pan pieces, springs, old cans, etc....I wasn't finding much of interest but eventually found a piece of a small metal plane, a belt buckle..looks newer ( Hickok Belt | History ), a pipe knob, lipstick container...and such. It was fun but not all that productive. On the way back to the car I found an interesting small metal wreath..not sure of age. I was excited to find a coin and just had to spit and rub to see it was a copper but hard to read the date....looks like 183? to me. It was disconcerting to see fresh scat on the way out. I put deer scat on the left for size comparison, but not sure what the dark sort of lumpy scat is. I was in New England woods, not far from houses but definitely a wooded area on a hill during the afternoon.

You discovered some wonderful finds! That wreath is amazing and reminds me of the wreath on the back of our beloved Indian Head Cents. Nice Large Cent and many way cool old relics. Whoever hunted there before you missed a lot of goodies.:headbang:

Lots of great finds. Nice work. I have a Hickok buckle similar to yours. I think it is plated silver, but yours looks better. Does it have a halmark?

Thanks. The buckle is marked "HICKOK MADE IN USA. It also says "HICKOK PLATED". I thought recently read of a Hickok find...It must have been your post. I hadn't heard of it before. There is a lot of detail if I use a magnifying glass. Thanks for checking out the finds!

Thanks, Kurios1. The wreath is substantial and pretty neat but I can't find anything to date it. It seems more recent than 1800s to me but who knows? The large cent still thrill upon finding even if I can't read the date. There is so much to discover and learn about. I know I keep detecting my own property and in places I have been before, and I continue to make some finds. It always surprises and pleases me. [emoji6]

Good thing you didn't step in that. Looks like a moose to me.

In looking at the eagle head again, maybe it was more like a poker handle than a walking stick as the top of the head is quite comfortable putting a thumb on top while grabbing the head.

Congrats on some nice finds! While nice, as a hunter, I find the Deer poop more interesting as it is from a decent sized Whitetail Buck and not from a Moose. A Whitetail Buck's poop is generally always larger than that of a Doe and mostly sticks together in clumps while a Doe's poop are generally in pellets the size and slightly larger than a Rabbit's poop pellets.

Thanks, Frank. I walk the woods a lot and often find deer pellets of various "freshness" but have not seen such a large pellet/grouped kind. Thanks "huntsman". I like learning about all kinds of finds, including this one. You and others have helped me "get to the bottom" of this question. [emoji4]

Ha! True. Really, a moose? I don't think we have any moose in RI..????

They are future spread then one would think. They don't read the road signs or seem to care about crossing state lines.

Interesting finds!! Congrats !!

Congrats on some nice finds and post, thanks for sharing

Nice going on the recoveries from the site. The wreath piece is interesting, seen something like that before and just can't put my finger on it at the moment.
It looks like the site has just been cherry picked, if you still came up with finds there's still some life to the site.
Don't be disconcerted about Bambi's mate leaving a pile behind "poop and Scoop" rules don't apply. Now if some dude was laying a log on top of a silver dime and laying leaves over it-well that's just not right!:laughing7:

Congrats on your finds. Huntsman53 is correct on his I.D. of your scat pile. It does appear to be from a Whitetail Buck. The pellets on the left are from a Doe. I've been a deer hunter for 35 years, so I feel comfortable backing up his I.D.

Congratualtions on the very productive hunt! :occasion14:

Coronet Liberty Head large cent, 1816-1839. Very nice finds!!
