Two people hiking in the Czech Republic found a treasure trove worth over $340,000 while walking on the edge of an overgrown forest, according to the museum that took possession of the items.

The Museum of East Bohemia said the hikers found gold coins, jewelry and tobacco bags. The found objects weighed about 15 pounds, the museum said on social media.

Nice find by them.... but how in the hell did a museum get involved I wonder.

Likely buried to avoid confiscation by the government, but the government got it eventually and the people who found it got a consolation prize and a tax receipt. 😛 Imagine finding all that gold, I want, time to sing the gold song.

UnderMiner I agree 100% with your assentation about avoiding their government / confiscation / Tax's ! I remember reading another story of a man from the Philippians that found some Japanese General's gold hideouts across the Philippians islands and after he showed it to the press "they " took it from him . Great story !

That's some haul!

The 598 gold coins were French, Turkish, Belgian, and Austro-Hungarian, along with a few from Romania, Italy, and Russia, dated between 1808 and 1915 with one dated to 1921. The museum said it was clear that the primary motivation for hiding the treasure was the precious metal, particularly gold, rather than purchasing power of the coins.

It’s possible that the hoard was hidden in the lead up to Nazi Germany’s annexation of the region in the 1930s when hundreds of thousands of Jews and Czechs feared persecution or deportation, with many hiding their valuable from the invading armies.
