I was wondering where everybody hides there rolls. I would love to buy a safe but seems like a lot of money. I would rather spend on silver. :) It makes me nervous to have all this laying around. Ever since my dad gave me all his coins, they have been spread out around the house. Got me to wondering where everybody kept theres. I have them behind books on bookshelves. In the false bottom of a grandfather clock. I really want a safe. It would be nice to have them all together and safer. Anybody have any pictures of your safe you would like to share? Anybody know where you can pick up a safe for cheap?

My safety deposit box at my bank costs about 20 dollars a year, if I remember correctly. Pretty cheap to have someone else handling security- LOL!

I thought about that but with all the stuff in my dad's collection, including a laundry basket full of mint sets and proof sets covered with clothes, I would have to have several. A safe would pay for itself after awhile.

A safe also gives you fire protection. I do not like safety deposit boxes, due to the limited access and government regulations.

Well....the problem with a safe would be that in order to have one large enough not to carry off in the event of a robbery...its got to be big....and they are bulky...Those little safety fireproof boxes dont cut it...

What about one of those standing gun safes? Some of them are very narrow...could easily place extra shelves in it and then position it in the back of a closet and make a false back to the closet...no one would even know its there....

My wife's uncle has an antique safe that would be perfect. Problem is he kept the combination on the inside and somebody shut it. My mother-in-law is going to call and see if he still has it. Do you think a locksmith could open it? Might get it real cheap but if I can't get it open, who cares.

If you do go buy a safe just don't go overboard like I did ;)

I have this little safe next to my bed. I bought it at wal-mart for around $10 and drilled 4 holes in the bottom. Then I bolted it to the floor with 3" Lag bolts (see 2nd pic). It would be near impossible for someone to pry it up from the floor. But remember if someone wants it bad enough they will find a way no matter how big your safe is. The box is fire resistant but I don't know to what degree. The real important stuff I keep at the bank. These boxes would be very versatile and could be mounted just about anywhere where you could screw it down. I plan on putting one in the back floor board of my Jeep. The only key to this box is on my key chain and goes in the lock when I go to bed and comes out when I get up. This keeps everything safe from little hands and I can still find it easy in the dark if I need to.

I use a hidden room in my house where I also keep my gun safes. I am thinking of installing one of the old "Safe" style doors on the room because the gun collection out grew the gun safes long ago.

maybe not pry it out of the floor but pry that tin lid off real easy :-\
by the way nice piece ;D
its all about leverage when it comes to "peeling a safe"
if you can lay it on its back
the weight of the safe itself is a force acting on the door
in the event of the door being pryed off
those cheapo walmart fire safes you can tear up with a LARGE HEAVY well made screwdriver
hell even freeze it with liquid nitrogen or with freon or other refrigerant
then shatter it with a small sledge hammer
no offence MR.T

I keep mine in mason jars on my dresser

No offence taken :). Like I said if someone wants it it bad enough they will find a way. Hell at my father inlaws business he had a fairly large safe about the size of the one that CC has in his pic and it was bolted to the floor. The problem was that it set up on legs about 6" off of the floor and someone slid a heavy duty jack under and jacked it up until the bolts pulled out of the floor and then dollied it out the back door.
The main purpose for this box is to make sure that I can keep the kids out of it. It is a handy little box but like I said the real important stuff is at the bank ;)

I take all of my gold and silver to the bank. Whenever I get enough to fill up a rolls worth I then just drop it off at my safe deposit box.

Right now I have a locking 2 drawer file cabinet.
And for crime deterrent, I have an extremely loud dog, and the usual armaments required for living in one of the Southern states, where everyone has a gunpowder fetish lol.

Now for a real LOLOLOL. Wife's X used to keep all his guns in a large gun vault, it had a glass front. He put a dymo lable on it saying "don't bother stealing these guns, the fireing pins are all in the safe." So, of course, they moved the safe to the garage and used his tools to peel it. He was a cop and HAD some neat things. Your'e right, if they really want to get in they will.

yea i think my gun safe is pretty nice i have my guns and money in there and it is bolted to the floor. You can try and steal it but the dog would be upset I keep his bones in there. LOL he watchs it all the time.
