Hilton Head Island would be a great location to hunt. There are a lot of tourists who vacation there, but not so many detectors constantly scanning the beach like in Myrtle Beach. I have never been there either, but should start making my way down the coast checking out the beaches.
As far as Civil War relics, they are definately all over SC, especially in the Charleston area. As in all detecting, you can luck into a campsite or battlefield, but with a little research, you can place your detector in a field you know to be a good hunting spot. Research!
West coast or East coast? My opinion only: West coast is rich in buried and hidden treasures. Much more than that of the East coast. East coast is rich in Relics, with a handfull of buried and hidden treasures. Don't fall into that lost or hidden civil war payroll stuff. There are other treasures that are more likely to exist if you take time to do the research around the east coast.
Good luck, and if you pass through Myrtle Beach on your way through SC give me a shout.

I have timeshare at Hilton Head. Been going for over 10 years. 1st week ofJune and Christmas week. I know that all the beaches are public but the problem is ACCESS. To my knowledge there are only about 4 or 5 access points available to the general public. Also they are all metered parking spaces. Aren't many free spaces around. All the beaches are on the east side of the island facing the ocean of course. It's ok to detect there as far as I know. I've only seen 1 guy in all the times I've been going there. Something else you might want to consider: Don't detect around ponds close to the water. BIG GATORS all over spawning in the ponds. They only relocate them when they get over 8 feet or get a bad attitude. Not worth losing an arm for or worse. Hunting for relics is strictly a no-no I think. Most everything there is privately owned. June will be my first HHI hunt with my new MXT. I nee to buy anothe coil, maybe a 14 DD because it's a BIG,BIG beach. Any other questions you might have just PM me.

Thanks for the info. If I get to go I will only have about three days there, so will not have much research time after arriving. I should be able to get off to a good start with the info you have given me. Especially the part about the gators. Don't want to tangle with any of them. Thanks again fellows.

Mudd,
I live in Beaufort and visit Hilton Head weekly.? I have never MD'd there but my best bet would be around the Holiday Inn area on the South End of the island.? This has the most tourist traffic and best looking beaches for detecting.? Stay off the dunes!? Some areas have private beaches.? You may run into some problems if you venture too far away from the public areas.? But don't let them give you a hard time!? They don't own the water and anyone can walk along the beach up to the high water mark, which is where their property ends.

As far as relics go, there are lots of great areas to look, but almost all are private.

You should do good on the beaches!

Good Luck!

Robert in SC

Thanks Rgecy. Sounds like some very good advice. I hope I get to go and can detect without any problems. Hate to see the man with the shiny badge and a gun on his side. Happy Hunting;
