So my birthday is coming up and my girlfriend wants to take me to some historic mining towns in California (surprisingly wants to share my interest lol). And the only town I've found somewhat close to me is Columbia, ca. I know there was a lot of mining going on in northern ca, does anyone know of any interesting towns that share its history with the public? And maybe some with creeks nearby ;)

Look along highway 49. It runs through many historic motherlode towns. My wife and I drove a good piece of it last month and there are tons of neat things to see and do.

Not sure where your at but.......Up north I'd spend the day in Grass Valley, and take a tour of the Empire mine, head over to Nevada City for a "miners pie" dinner. You could easily spend the whole weekend touring around the area lots to see. Head up 49 to Malakoff Diggins state park and then on to Downieville. Or go down 49 towards Coloma, Sutters Mill, Hangtown and Placerville. If you want to go further down the state -Jackson, Roaring Camp and Murphy's are fun to check out. Eastern side of the Sierra's, Bodies cool. Get a dart and a map of the motherload, lots to see, ya can't go wrong. Pretty much all of the above named have some really good museums. Another option I just thought of is the Gold Nugget Museum in Paradise' living history days, should be starting fairly soon. Good luck and happy b-day

Mallakoff, Nevada City, Grass Valley,Sierra City....closest to you and less populated then the central and southern mines.

I'm in shasta county, in any of this areas is there old mine tours, like under ground? Thanks for the info though, I appreciate it!

Hey Jordan, Old Shasta, Redding, Weaverville, ha ha, The best bang for the money would be a day in Grass Valley/Nevada City, underground tour of the Empire, its fantastic. If you can get a hold of the 16 to One you may be able to get their underground tour the same day or weekend. TRINITYAU/RAYMILLS

Yeah, I'd do Grass Valley/Empire mine tour. Further north you can visit Downieville and Sierra City. Both are just awesome little towns. Malakoff diggins. Can't go wrong on Hwy 49 anywhere. If you go further south, visit the county courthouse in Auburn. There's a museum there with some great gold nuggets to view. Another awesome town with history. And of course there's always Coloma where it all started.
