Hit a few banks today. Cross some more "firsts" off the list
I have another mega road trip (probably over 300 miles) planned for this Friday. This morning I'm on the internet planning my route when the CRH bug bites HARD. I just have to do some searching today. About 20 miles away is a town with 18 banks. I have hit them all before, some multiple times. In the whole town combined, before today, I believe I have pulled 4 40%ers total, and all of those came from 1 bank which ironically was my first stop at the first bank in the town on my first trip. But, I haven't been to any of the banks in at least a couple of months. Plus, I have a few more "tricks" up my sleeve now that I have been at this awhile. So I head off with fingers crossed looking for that collection someone dumped for some extra Christmas money.
The first 7 banks gave up nothing, not even 1 lone clad half. Bank #8 had a coin counter with $621 in halves in it, but the manager was out to lunch. Was told to check back later. Banks 9-14 produced 2 clad halves. Bank #15 (another branch of Bank #8) had 1 loose clad half, and a coin counter. I have NEVER scored a bag from a branch of this particular bank (but I always ask anyway). Shockingly they just pulled the bag off the machine and sold it to me. $418.50. I could hear silver as they were pulling the bag. Bank #16 had a coin counter and I was told by a teller at another branch (Bank #6) that they would sell me the bag. They did, but it only had $9 in it. 4 were 40%ers though including a gold plated 1965. Banks 17 & 18 had nothing.
So I return to bank #8. I can tell the manager doesn't want to sell me the bag, and she isn't overly friendly. Thats putting it too nicely. She is nowhere near friendly. She starts out by giving me the "we don't know how much is in the bag until it fills" line. I know that isn't true (as I already know there is $621 in there). I nicely say that I will happily finish filling the bag and then buy it. She still balks. I let it be known - nicely, but very matter-of-fact, that my 87 year old grandfather has a large CD in their bank, and that I make all the decisions on where his money is deposited - which is 100% truthful. I also offer to open my own account, if that will help. She mumbles something about me just closing the account as soon as I get the bag. I tell her that one of the other branches just sold me a bag with no hassle a few minutes ago. She basically calls me a liar and calls the other branch expecting to catch me in that lie. The look on her face when she found out I was indeed telling the truth was priceless! Eventually she relents and tells me that if I will top off the bag she will sell it to me even though she doesn't want to, "just because the other branch did."
After going through all of that, I scored my very first SKUNK bag from a machine (but it did contain an extra $1.02 in assorted change and a car wash token). The other bag was much better. While being 74 cents short, it produced 58 40%, 4 '64 Kens, 1 Ben ('61D), my first 90% silver proof (2000S), 1972S clad proof, an '82P no FG, and a few foreign - 2 British 50 pence (1997, 2005), and a Mexican Diez Pesos (1998).
Totals: 18 banks (only 2 produced silver), $1050 searched producing 6 90% and 62 40%. Not a bad start to the year.
