So I have been doing some in depth research on a few older areas around town. I slipped by a location next to a railroad that I thought may be a good site. I walk around without MD and see some old building footings and other clues to lead me to think that it is early 1900's.
There was a phone number to call on the door so I did.

The man called me back today, He gave me the full history of the area the building was on. Its been there since 1894 during the great "COX" switch, a railroad switch and the man Cox formed the town around that time period. It was a general store a hardware store and a small train depot.

He told me NO and that his insurance would not allow me to be there. I told him I was in it for the history and after that he asked me these questions no BS.

- Do you really think there is anything worth anything here?
- How would you find it?
- Can just anyone use a metal detector?
- What kind do you have and where did you get it?
- "There prolly aint no stuff there worth anything"

And last but not least, "Where do you sell all this stuff you find?"

I gave him the least information I could without being an ass, I even gave him the right to look over the finds and split them.

Even after all that he told me that if he needed some help he would call me back!

This is my first experience with this type of deny, I am really perplexed. After he tries to figure out the line of BS i gave him he will probably just give up.

I bet he is not up at 5am. ;D ;D (I dint see a no trespass sign there)

I could only hope you told him you need to wear steel toed shoes so you don't burn your feet from the radio waves created by the detector.

I've never run into this kind of problem, and mostly I've had the opposite luck. i've got permission to hunt more ground than I can cover in a lifetime here in Virginia.....but.....

If I did run into this type scenario, I'd ask the guy if he wanted to come with me, so he doesn't have to spend several to many hundreds of dollars on equipment you already have. Then switch to "all-metal" mode, and dig up every pop-top and beer can you can find. After a few hours, when he gets REALLY bored/discouraged, and is ready to bail, ask if you can keep looking without him, and promise to clean up the trash you dig up. Then get serious !

lol too funny....that with the steel toed boots would make a great outfit for him to wear!

it takes all kinds to make the world go round but here is how I would of answered his questions

Do you really think there is anything worth anything here? yeah the iron and pull tabs are up in prices right now
- How would you find it? with a lot of luck

- Can just anyone use a metal detector? sure I would be happy to meet you out there and show you

- What kind do you have and where did you get it? well you really need (insert any over priced extremely hard to use detector) and your in luck because they are on sale right now, I believe the price is down to $999.00

- "There prolly aint no stuff there worth anything" your right but its the thought of finding something someone else lost or discarded years ago.

And last but not least, "Where do you sell all this stuff you find?" sell it??? I never sell any of it, I display it and share its history with others. Each piece has its own story.

Shaw, let him go out buy a detector get frustrated and believe there is nothing there worth anything. Call him in about 6 months again. He will probably laugh and say sure but theres nothing there but trash good luck.

Where do you get one?

Wally World sells them just be sure you turn the controls up to max to get the most out of it.
