Hoarding Silver & Gold for survival. How will you spend them ? Whats your plan.

I know people that are hoarding silver coins and gold, because they think the world will be hit with a huge disaster in 2012. They also think a New World Order will take over and make most currencies worthless. They have 10 other nutty theories of other bad things that will happen. They can not tell me who they will be spending the gold and silver with and how. I guess they think the shopping malls will be open ? It opens many questions when I talk to them, that they can not answer, or give a vague answer. Why hoard it, if you have no idea how it will be used.

My opinion is you will be at someones mercy, if you do not have a big shopping market and need something from one person, they will want all you have. You may need your silver and gold to get to another Country ?

Lets just assume you were in the situation of a bad event happening, what would be your game plan and blue print on how to survive.

Honestly, precious metals have an inflated value to begin with. For many years gold was at $35/per troy ounce, now look at it. Are you worried about having to swap a gold ring for a quart of milk, or a week of groceries? If that is the case, you will need a stash as big as Fort Knox to get by. I'll just bury any I have and let someone in the future have fun with their MD looking for it.

The main point to the precious metals is for trade (barter)
Many things, outside of metal, can also be bartered.

I don't usually make suggestions like this, but go watch the movie The Book of Eli... the concept is very similar.

While I do consider precious metals to be part of a well rounded disaster portfolio they are not too high up on the list. History shows that precious metals will always retain some value and have a place for bartering. In a disaster situation I would be open to bartering some of my goods for metals but only if I had plenty of that item and I thought the rebuilding of society was near. Water, protection, knowledge, food and shelter are some of the things I place above precious metals. Many of the people that are hoarding gold and silver don't have the knowledge they need to survive a disaster so they think they can buy their way out.

I cleared an extra 1/4 acre (now one under till). Added some chickens to bring us to 33 (currently 4 roosters & 29 hens - just put six roosters in the freezer). Have a male & female turkey and just sold their last brood to buy feed for a while.

Ordered up a bunch more seed last week.

And this is just to supplement our full-time jobs. We raise/shoot/harvest about 75% of our meat and vegetable intake and - in hard times - could do 100% for a long stretch.

We're set for a bit.

Gold is pretty but has no nutritional value and silver has an odd taste. Skills that are transferrable and self-sustaining. Now that's a good investment.

Yes, self sufficiency is the answer to global disaster. But even if all currency becomes just paper, gold and silver will always have value. A lot of products can and will be made from both. Also copper could become as valuable as either. When and if it does happen, you wont be able to buy what you need, even with silver and gold reserves. Being able to live off the land will also be harder because everyone else will be trying to do the same. Only the strong will survive in that situation. But if you live near others who are self sufficient, you may need gold or silver to barter with them. Good Luck. rockhound

Sure, it (the economy) stumbles and trips over itself occasionally - usually because someone is raking in a fortune at the expense of others.

Gold and silver is a good investment, historically, but as a hedge against global catastrophy? You'd trade a lot of gold for a drink of fresh water if none was available. Dig a well, not a bunker.

You want a barter investment? Buy shovels and axe heads.

While you can build a fire with wood, as long as it lasts in a situation like that, you can't build electricity with axe heads and shovels. With silver,copper, and gold, with the knowlege, you can create your own electricity. You could live like a neanderthal, but it would not be nearly as comfortable. I think I will hold onto my precious metal, so if needed, I can use them to build electricity. If you really want to live primitive, just find a cave and move in, store some supplies and sit back and see if it happens.Good Luck. rockhound

i plan to hoard salt, sugar, coffee, all of you can pay me in gold or silver i am not picky. when everyone rebuilds and things get back to normal you can find me on a warm beach living the high life.

if that don't happen i guess ill just fall back on winning the lotto.

I hope things don't get that bad. But just look at Haiti, and realize what can happen anywhere. No, you may not get hit with a hurricane, but maybe a tornado, earthquake, or even an asteroid. There seems to be no place on earth to be safe from everything. Keep the essentials on hand, and you may be able to make it through. You will be better able to handle whatever comes along than those not prepared. rockhound

Gold was $35 an OZ. for many years because that was the rate that the US dollar was pegged to gold.Until 1970 our currency was backed by gold at a set rate-the peg,the amount it was worth in gold.In 1934 the great Socialist FDR devalued the the dollar from $20 to $35.This made the dollar worth less but made our trade goods abroad cheaper.Today our currency is backed by nothing,it's a fiat currency,that an unlimited amount can be printed(since it does not have to be backed by gold or silver).No fiat currency has ever survived long term.

What works on four-legged coyotes now will work on two-legged coyotes later. I chuckle when I see headlines "Arsenal siezed - 500 rounds of ammo in house!" I have that much just in the nightstand. Also good and trusted neighbors who all hunt. One end of the road a sheriff and the other end career military. Our "neighboorhood watch" is through crosshairs.

I'm still working on the Mr. Wizard techniques involved in generating household electricity with silver and gold. I know you can run a clock with a potato and a piece of copper plus a piece of zinc. That's why our debased post'82 cents self destruct - galvanometric corrosion.

I used to own a 34 ft sailboat, still have a much less equipped 31' Pearson. You'd be surprised what you can do with only 12 volts. We've got a stream beside the house and the 'ol Ford 640 has a low-tech battleworthy alternator, so when the gas is gone I can get 13.6 volts with a paddlewheel. Only light in the barn is 12v solar. House water and baseboard heat is fuel oil or wood. Heck, we're far enough out that we can count on losing power several times each winter. Enough so that we have three wall mounted kerosene lamps in the living room and a ceiling hung kerosene lamp over the kitchen counter.

You don't have to wait for the end times to simplify a bit and "get off the grid". We make our own bread, sauerkraut and pickles, and I homebrew beer and wine. We've also played around with maple sugaring and canning and jerking meat. Some skills should be kept alive "just in case". With the crocks, bottles and jars we're set to store food without refrigeration as long as the pickling salt holds out. I made 10 gallons of sauerkraut last fall. Vitamin C all winter long. (Now there's an investment - that dumb 10 gallon crock would soak you more at an antique shop than should be legal). First sign of disaster I'm hording salt! Heck with gold. 50 pounds in the water conditioner - when the electricity goes that is a useful reserve.

That said, a selection of PCGS graded and slabbed gold or silver coins in as good a grade as you can afford locked away in a bank security deposit box would not be a foolish investment for retirement funds. Worst case you have the bullion value. Best case the numismatic value is many, many times that.
