Hole in coin

This is second one I found with a hole drilled in it why would they do that. ?

Are you sure it was drilled? With that date, more than likely it was nailed to the threshold of the house, as was relatively common for luck back then.

Coins were also sometimes sewn into the lining of clothing to carry as well, or sometimes on a string to carry around the neck. A lot of clothing did not have pockets.
