HOLY CRAP! FLIPPIN' COINS, Dirty Girls and Leapin' Lizards!

HOLY CRAP!!!! Has it REALLY been a MONTH since my last post? That’s almost a lifetime for this place! I wonder if anyone even remembers me by now…. Hmmm..? Oh well, I know I’ve been busy with work , and.. well.. “Life”.. so I’ve not had as much time to spend on my favorite hobby as I would have liked, but I have gotten out a few times in the past three weeks. Today , for example, after chauffeuring my darling wife to a doctor’s appointment in a city one state away and over an hour and a half’s drive from our home this morning, I managed to get out and swing a little bit after getting back home. Between rain showers that is. I don’t mind the rain so much, as long as there is no lightning involved! Yipes!
There was no lightning today however, and truth be told, little rain, at least at the location I went to detect at anyway. But I’ll get back to that in a bit.. first I have to update or report or post about the hunt from last weekend, or rather the weekend before last now. <rolling eyes> I got out of most of my domestic chores for the morning and got myself down (one town over) to the soccer complex while all the kiddies were in school. Now that I’m back on my wacky work schedule at the job, I get days off in the middle of the week again. We work a continuous operation at “Dixie” in the plastics department.. meaning the manufacturing goes on round the clock, seven days a week. This is accomplished by having “crews” (four of them actually) that work twelve hour shifts with three days (or nights) “on” and three days (or nights) “off”. I know.. there are seven days a week, and if you only work three of them (in a row) you end up working some weekends.. that’s fine by me. I like days off in the middle of the week just as well. <grin> Anyway.. enjoying days off in the middle of the week allows me to detect at some of the places that I’ve had to pass on over the summer as they were packed wall to wall ..er… fence to fence.. with kiddies or soccer games.. or whatever. But now that everyone is back in school.. I’m free to clean up!
Yeah.. clean up! That’s what I did last..er.. the weekend , before, before last. I didn’t even detect out on the actual pitches (playing fields) at the soccer complex, just around the sidelines and to and from the parking lot. Now I know what you’re thinking.. “Do people lose that much coin going and coming? And just sitting around watching?” Yeah! They do! And I’m right there to pick up after them too. <grin> The odd thing is.. very little of my recent finds have been on the surface or “recent losses”. Oddly enough most of what I found was well under the roots of the grass deeper down in the soil. You know you keep hearing the “old timers” on here saying that there’s no such thing as a hunted out park. No matter how hard a place has been hit in the past by yourself or other detectorists.. there’s always more there waiting to be found. YEAH BOY! Is that EVER TRUE! Just quirks of the soil conditions, (moisture etc), atmospheric conditions.. sun spots, how the planets or stars are aligned.. battery condition in your machine.. hearing or attention condition of the operator.. <laughing> Or quite simply how close a coil has come to a particular find in the past I guess. Whatever the reason(s).. I find that that old “saw” is true.. There’s always something left to find. Fine with me! I’ll keep going back.
Three weekends ago I hit the soccer complex hard! I was only there for about three hours total, but I more than got my metal detecting fix for that day.. and HOW! My finds bag was running over! Coins coins coins and more coins! I found a bunch of tash as usual of course and curious odds and ends, two highlights however were the two Referee’s “flipping” coins. I’ve found a bunch of them at this park, first here’s a pick of the latest two I found (that day) ..

Toss coin comp9-12-09.webp

… and they were added to the still growing collection of Flipping or “Toss” coins.. check this out..

I found another soccer tournament “pin” too. I won’t show you all of that collection just yet.. <laughing>

pin 9-12-09.webp

And of course there was the coin.. clad.. and lots of it.. <grin>

Clad 9-12-09.webp

Now the weekend before last.. was even more productive.. I found ANOTHER Flipping coin.. not one that I already had in my collection mind you, but still neat.

agoraFlipper.webp

I also found a couple of dirty little Canadian Gals relaxing in the dirt.. Dang foreigners! <grin>

… and of course the finds bag sagging haul of clad.. oh my aching back! <smile>

Clad 9-18-09.webp

And TODAY.. I got out to the SAME complex (park) and detected some more. Like I said, I was late getting there in the day.. almost time for school to let out for the day so I only had about two hours to detect the far end of this soccer park. No new Flipping coins today.. but I did find a couple more foreigners .. One is a Euro coin.. the other I’m stumped on. It’s obviously Oriental (Asian) of some origin.. perhaps someone on here can identify it for me. Check them out..

As I said.. I only had a little time to hunt today, but it turned up .. “A little time”.. Indeed! I found a little watch down in the grass roots alongside one of the playing fields. “little” for sure.. the band is tiny! But the watch is still in good working order and other than being a bit dirty, is still in good shape. Check it out…

Leapin’ Lizards! I forgot to tell you I found a lizard today too !
I may not have found as much clad today as the past two outings, but I more than paid for my gas.. I’m happy with it! Here’s everything from today…

You could say that I’ve been busy, but I really haven’t. Not detecting anyway. But what little I did get out I mad the most of my time and enjoyed it immensely! I hope to get out and swing a little again tomorrow, weather permitting. I hope you all get to enjoy this hobby of ours as well. And.. I’ll try not to stay away so long this time too.. <grin> I kind of missed reading up on everyone else’s adventures. As always..

Very productive hunts you've been having...I would be too busy hunting to post too :headbang:

Wow, what an awesome collection! The next time you have a hard time making up your mind between hunting the ballpark or an old late 1800's home site, you can always toss one of those coins to help you decide. ;D

Well Cap'n.. to be honest, I've never had to make that choice yet. I've not gained access to any 1800's home sites, other than my own parents' home on the farm that I've hunted until I'm blue in the face. Not that I wouldn't like to search older residences.. just haven't had the opportunity as of yet. So.. no coin toss needed there. <grin> But you are right, I do have the perfect equipment now for a toss should it ever become necessary. <grin>

Well my Ky friend, I miss Lexington big time but the golf coast of Florida is great and the water is perfect! As for the coin it's from Thailand grrr I think the spelling is off. Anyway great finds, in the Ky bluegrass. Oh and have an Ale 8 one for me, I miss the Ky swamp water too.

Re: HOLY CRAP! FLIPPIN' COINS, Dirty Girls and Leapin' Lizards!

you always clean house on the clad..holey moley, ya might wanna think about getting a bigger bag to hold all your finds... or balance with another on the other side of your hip.. I would love to know what your totals are for a year.. holey cow.

Well Bull... I'll do that. Have an Ale-8-one for you today. <smile> Might be the high point for my day. As I type it's raining outside. *sigh* Don't guess I'll be detecting anywhere anytime soon today. Guess I can catch up on some reading and posting huh?
Was that a typo or intentional.. the "GOLF" coast of Florida? <laughing> I thought the entire state of Florida was a golf course. Oh sure.. there are lots of sand traps and water hazards depending on how far back in the 'glades you go.. got to watch out for them pesky gators too I suppose. One of my best friends and former roomate lives in Largo, just north of Clearwater on the "Golf" coast. <smile> He's always raggin' on me about the weather being so nice there. Oh well, I like variety.. and in Kentucky we DEFFINATELY get a variety of weather. Hell, if it doesn't suit you at the moment, stick around, it'll change in a few minutes! <grin>
Thailand huh? Cool! I might not get to travel the world, but somehow or another coins from all around the globe end up in my little corner of it anyway. Thanks!

Lol!!! You did catch my lil joke :D Well I was raised in Lexington, graduated from Lexington Catholic 76 and grew up on the farm off of Spurr Rd. right next to Linlee School. The house I lived in is gone and the only thing standing is the barn, or it was the last time google earth took a pic of it. I do miss the smell of the mornings there and the crisp air. Happy hunting.

Now there's an idea Booty.. thanks! Hmmm.. no.. that wouldn't work though, another bag on the other hip... *sigh* I'd have to carry my Lesche (spelling?) either in the middle of my back (on my butt) or hanging down the front of my belt.. <shaking head negatively> Uhhh.. NO! Either place could be just a bit disastorous depending on how I bent over when I went to pin point a find or dig it up. <laughing> I'll just have to limp lopsidedly along with just the one finds bag.. and maybe make more trips back to my truck to empty it out as it gets full. YEAH! That's the Ticket!
As for my totals?.. Not to brag mind you, but I recovered enough coin in the first six months to pay for my Prizm IV, and I was still a certifiable "Rookie" then. Since then I've matched the cost of the machine about three times over. Any clad I find becomes part of the "Vacation Fund" as my wife puts it. My detecting has paid for three different (week long) hotel stays at Myrtle Beach SC. But don't be too impressed, I don't ALWAYS find this much clad when I get out detecting. No, usually a lot less to be sure, but in my mind ANYTHING is Amazing! Not to mention being a blast just finding anything at all. Got to love a hobby that pays you to indulge!

Oh man.. you are Local.. or were. <grin> I've Hunted Linlee School (grounds) many times. Bad news about that though.. it's no longer a working school, they've replaced it with a new facility. The old school is still there, but no students anymore as of this year. Fayette County Schools have closed a couple of other older schools too, and replaced them with brand new schools.. Athens Boonesborrow Elementary.. The old Elementary School out on Liberty Road.. and of course Linlee Elementary. *sigh* Sad really, in a way. No longer will the playgrounds ring with the sound of rugrats and romper stompers (yeah.. dating myself now). On the other hand, the brand new schools have brand new playgrounds with BIG playgrounds full of woodchips. <smile> Much easier to dig up treasures from the chips, especially when it's wet or freezing cold outside.
'76 huh? From Lexingont Catholic? I grew up just a couple of blocks from there, even went to school at ClaysMill Elementary. I still remember Old Picadome Elementary at the corner of ClaysMill and Harodsburg road. I went to Lafayette Senior High.. well.. for my sophomore year anyway.. in '77-'78. Lafayette won the State Boys Basketball Tournament that year. Of course we didn't do so well in football that year, and that's what I played. Of course the next year, my folks bought a farm in northern Scott County near Sadieville, so I finished High School in Scott County.. So I also know what you meant about the crisp morning air.. sometimes downright freakin' FREEZING morning air if you're waiting on the danged school bus to pick you up. <grin> Graduated in '81 myself.. god.. in only seems like yesterday at times, and other times seems like a lifetime ago. Wierd huh?
Small world!

Awesome collection

Re: HOLY CRAP! FLIPPIN' COINS, Dirty Girls and Leapin' Lizards!

There are two huge soccer complexes that are well used that I have access to. I haven't found anything yet on them except a little change at either end of the bleachers. I can't figure out why my fields are so bare after everyone else apparently cleaning up on them? Weird. Monty

Re: HOLY CRAP! FLIPPIN' COINS, Dirty Girls and Leapin' Lizards!

Frodov, Always.....always get a kick in the pants reading your posts. :laughing7: Enjoy them immensely.
The one coin that you asked about....I see plenty of them, on a daily basis. It's a Korean 10 won coin. There is a much
smaller version now, but until 2 years ago, that was the standard for buying ice creams and goodys with. :laughing9:
Will look forward to seeing your post next month.....I'm about a once-a-month poster, too. :tongue3:

Re: HOLY CRAP! FLIPPIN' COINS, Dirty Girls and Leapin' Lizards!

Soccor Complex's are my favorite spots to hunt. I gotta bunch of pins and a few flip coins. I've found some nice gold, platinum and silver rings at these places.

Thanks for sharing.
