Homemade diggin' tool

When I bought my detector about a month ago the salesman tried to sell me a tool for $45, said it listed for $65, I think it was a Lesch. I told him he was nuts, took my machine & skidaddled. I made this today at work, Im a welder/fitter by trade, all stainless steel, I could drive over the top of it with my 3/4 ton suburban & not dent it. My camera realy blows so pics arent very good. Blade is cut from 2inch stainless sanitary pipe, (food grade) End cap screws off to stash clad or whatever.............Im thinking a few shots of 12 year old scotch for sneakin a few blasts while hunting the parks! lol Doesnt show up well but I notched one side of blade for cutting roots, or muggers in the shady areas of town. I will find some kind of soft foamy material this weekend at Home Depot for the handle, just have black electricians tape on it for now. I'll test it thoroughly this weekend & let ya'all know how it does.

Just a standing Joke I'm a Pipefitter by trade and that's a fine looking digger, I made my own as well. Let us know how it does, I'm in the process of fabricating a plugger hope it turns out well, HH Art...

Nice work AP, you should put those on the market! I suspect the best handle foam you'll find at the Home Depot would be pipe insulation in plumbing dept. The kneeling pads for garden work (in the garden dept.) would be a better foam, but you'd have to cut it up and spend more time wrapping into the right shape. That's the best I can figure, but I've worked every department in the Home Depot stores. Again, NICE WORK... it's a beauty! -Ben

Hey Jim, this is proto type #2, I'll make a few improvements & as soon as I can I'll sneak one out & send it to you. Try it, if it aint quite your style just pass it along to someone who can use it. I just ran down to the park for an hour & dug about 25 holes for clad (alright..........a pocket full of pulltabs) & this thing realy rocks! Best tool I've used in my diggin career! OK, I've been detecting for about a month now, but it does work well. I have to be a little sneaky about fabricating personal projects during work, but yours is next on the list & I'll get er done as quick as I can & send er out to ya!
And Tinpan, I like your digger, looks like that thing would work on the muggers as well! lol

When I was a bit younger (OK quite a bit) I had a prybar like that for ripping up flooring. I got pulled over once and the officer saw it in the back seat. wanted to arrest me for possession of burglary tools. what a crock was not a fun way to spend an afternoon

Hey RTDE3, I work mostly with stainless & carbon steel, not much alluminum experience, but...........I would try to heat it with a rosebud & bend it back, it should work just fine. Bottom line, if it doesnt you can cut the handle at the scoop & have a new one welded on. I wouldnt get the handle too hot, just hot enough to bend it back & no more. As a suggestion, you might try using a bicycle grip for the handle...

Get a sports wrap for the handle of a golf club, tennis racket, or baseball bat. They all just wrap around and I am sure you can find one that suits you.

i would say that would do the job wow i really love the screw off top to put your finds in. put in for a pat, on that tool and sell it to a company. i sure would like to have one. nice job

yeah,, i would definately buy one,, consider this an order for one,, green 1 mass........... i would like one that can take a moderate hammer hit ,as i hunt all year , maybe a solid steel end cap ??

Here's my favorite digger but obviously one can't carry it into the average park! But for more wild sites it's supreme.

I like your tool. Hope you're able to market it.
