Basically, a martingale is a breast collar, which has several purposes...like keeping a saddle from sliding backwards...also used sometimes as a head restraint to keep a horse from tossing its head...

The attached picture indicates the basic principle, however, there are many style variations...

A belt-like strap extends from either side of the saddle and are attached to the girth strap 'D Ring' or separate buckled belt, and a third strap extends between the front legs and hooks to the girth strap. All 3 straps meet in the center of the breast, usually attached to a flat metal ring.

A 4th strap is sometimes used and is attached to the halter or the bit.

If you have ever been hit in the face by a the horses tossed head you would appreciate this device
