I finally decided to get out to see what all of this metal detecting business is about. I scored permission to a 1903 small farmhouse close to town that I've been wanting to try my luck. Of course, I picked a scorcher of a day. 8-)
The backyard was full of trash, and the mosquitos drained about a pint of blood from me, so I stuck to the front yard for my 2 hour hunt. I gridded off back and forth but found nothing old in the front yard until I made it up to a hedge line closer to the road. These hedges must have provided shade for someone, because I found all my coins and kids toys on the shade side of the hedges.
I think someone must have beat me to this property, because I did not find any older coins in the large open section of the front yard. Only dug a small lion pendant in that area close to the house.

My finds today were:
*A permanent wedgy from the heat :tongue3:
*1909 IH cent (no "S" mint mark) nicked by shovel :BangHead:
*WHEATS= 1909 (no VDB), 1911, 1926, 1950
*No date Buff nickel
*Lion pendant
*Kids toy pieces (1940"s?)
*Two vaccine tags - one from Alaska
*Flattened coin
*Wheel caster

That's all Folks. Thanks for l@@king.

Nice assortment of finds...

MM, Nice hunt for a scorching and humid NC day. Is the lion pendant marked? Who would have 'thunk' an Alaska tag would be here? LOL

Way to go

Breezie

I appreciate you neglecting to post a pic of the perm-o-wedgie. ;)

nice finds!Yeah she was a hot one today.God showed a little mercy up this way and hid the sun behinds the clouds for the second half of the day anyway. So what do you think about MDing, kind of addictive?

When you got permission you should have included a "garden hose clause" that allows you to drink from the hose at any time. On a scorching hot summer day there is no finer drink than that from a garden hose...

Great finds!!! I'm jealous of the Buffalo as I really want to find one!

Did you have to read the manual to figure out how to turn it on Doug? Been awhile....I thought maybe you, Dman and Mr. Q had taken up whittling, lol. Good bunch of finds for a newcomer:tongue3:
That bullet looks to be old judging it by the color....is the base hollow?

Thanks Breezie. I couldn't find any markings on the lion piece, but it came out of the ground shiny.

LOL. I tried, but my camera kept saying, "out of focus, bring in for service". :laughing7:
Thanks for looking,

Yeah, this detecting thing IS addictive for sure. I've been at it about 12 years now. Still need to check that silver dollar and gold coin off my wish list.
Thanks,
MM

I agree with that. I remember those hot days as kids, playing baseball, and making frequent garden hose trips. Now they had to come up with that expandable/collapsible hose, so it makes it tricky. :laughing7:
Thanks,

Nice array of finds HOT Miner-LOL. HH, Q.

Falls coming Q. I sure hope you and Dman have a virgin CW site ready for my visit. This is the year I am going to grace you with my presence. :occasion14:

You are a nut! You know when you get our (Q,D, & Me) age, you have to pace yourself Dave. This heat tends to loosen the glue on the dentures and the Ben Gay heats up something awful out in the sun, not to mention the heat build up in our Depends. :tongue3:

Not sure on the bullet? It was about 6-8" down and has a concave base.

Is there a section in the manual on how to turn on a detector? My turns me on when it finds something, so I was hoping to return the passion. :tongue3:

Heading up to Ind and Wisc on Sat for two weeks. I hope its in the 60's and 70's up north.

Have a great weekend Big Guy.

Thanks Nanner's. I did find an IH, but it wasn't reverse lettering like yours.

You made some really nice finds. The house looks SO promising. I definitely would have been tickled with your finds but you would think there would have been at least one old silver coin waiting for you there.

I agree, there should have been a silver or two somewhere on that large lawn. :dontknow:
I may go back once the skeeters are gone and try the backyard again. I could see bricks sticking out of the dirt where an outbuilding once sat.
Thanks for looking,
MM
