How am I doing so far?

Hi, I'm posting this for my son Matt(12yr old):

i am a newbie to glass collecting and i have been doing it for a month, but am i doing good so far? there are milk bottles,coca cola bottles,a medicine bottle (PHILLIPS MILK OF MAG......)marbles,and decorative glass,a square one and alot of bottoms of bottles, is there anything rare or worth some money or at least older than 1955(just a random date), the full bottle was found today in the woods. Is the fockin bottle worth anything or is it old?and a white thing that looks like a stamp, it says,philada and a large r in the middle.any info on any bottles would be great. Matt

i'm new to this too,, ( 2 days experience ) the stamp looking thing is a cork-top from what i've been told,, it had a wire going through it at one time.... keep em comin.......i'm having a blast doing it......

Hey Matt! Good going! You have an eye for color, that's for sure! And you're doing just fine. Shards are cool looking- and if you put them in a clear glass vase or jar w/ water and a little bleach, they'll look great in your mom's window. The marbles are very cool- and some are worth...sometimes quite a bit, but I'm no expert. You'll have to get a book on those- or find a site online for answers. There are threads on this site that explain what to look for, date-wise, when finding bottles. Cork, or stopper-top type bottles are obviously older than screw-tops. Check the seam along the side of the bottle. If it goes all the way up to the top of the lip, it's pretty new. If it stops at the 'shoulder', then the neck and lip was probably applied after the bottle was molded. Some don't have seams at all, lots of bubbles in the glass, and a mark on the bottom where the glass-blower attached a blowing tube. That's called a pontil mark-- and THAT means it's REALLY old. I have a lot of 'middle-aged' dumps around here, where I find milk-glass (the color of milk), blue milk of magnesia bottles (both screw-top and stopper-top) and depression glass. Some of that green glass you have looks like depression glass (made during the depression back in the early '30's). I also know that if you find a dump, many times it was used for generations, so what you see on top is only the tip of the iceberg, if you know what I mean. So keep digging, wear leather gloves, and have FUN!!!
