A well known life-time detectorist Iggy Stiles claims thats the best way to detect gold items, especially small stuff. It won't hurt the detector although I'd use
a coil cover if I did it a lot.

Touching or brushing the ground is the CORRECT way to detect. That is why scuff covers are important.

Think about it.. if you are 2" over the ground that is 2" less you are going Into the ground..

Raising a 7-9" sized coil 3-4" inches off the ground has a similar effect as using a small 3-4" coil and will aid in seeing targets adjacent to trash. All depends on what you are wanting to do as to where you search at in relation to ground level.

Must be a vegiphile.

I keep mine right on the ground. Maybe 3/4" above or so. Then once I get a signal I raise it to determine if it's worth the dig. The more you learn your machine you will find what works best for you.

I swing my coil so close to the ground...
The ants have to duck.

Always use a coil cover or an epoxy paint to avoid the coil to touch the ground or vegetation. Keep it from 1cm to 3-4cm high. When a "maybe sound" is heared, try to swing closer to the ground and make a 45° to 90° angle on it to check how the sound changes.

It'll help to get and remain you familiar with different angle approch on the same target and will give you an extra information : digg or not digging?

For me, when I'm sure it's not big iron or surface polution, I digg almost everything

Closer, the better!

Im about 1 foot above the ground at all times, I mostly detect paved roads so digging is a non issue. Its really fun to trace sewer pipes for miles in heavy traffic. Happy Hunting!

Heh... make sure you wear your yellow safety vest.
and detect till you find a man hole cover ...
At 1 foot you will still find them...
Bring some orange cones with you...

I think the Spanish and Knights Templars hid almost all treasures down most of them.
That is why they are really there... tunnels to the treasures...
That is where Jimmy Hoffa is living... and where UFO's beam goes down to...
man hole covers man...
Biggest conspiracy... since the lack of marshmallows in Lucky Charms...
OH... that brings up "raisin bran"...

I usually brush the ground with mine too, as mentioned above..raising the coil some after you get a signal is important...On my ATP, sometimes I will get a halfway decent sounding tone that reads in the mid 80s...and about 90% of the time, if I raise my coil up a couple inches and the numbers drop down to the mid 70s..i know its a crushed Alum. screw top

No more than 1" above the ground for me always get a coil cover !
