I live in Dallas. I know of a creek that has shells and imprints, as well as petrified wood and some neat crystallized rocks. I do not know what I can legally do there. How do I find out what's allowed?

I'd like to make a sifter out of 1/4" chicken wire mounted to a wooden frame, but don't know where I can legally sift. I ordered a pickaxe to mine pyrite from a creek on relative's property in Waxahache, but don't know if it would be legal to use anywhere else. I'm really not sure how to find out who owns what. Specifically, this creek doesn't run through private property but I don't know who owns it or what I'm allowed to do. I have had little luck in figuring all this out myself, can anyone more knowledgable advise me?

City ordinances for what ever city you want. Ask permission for private property

Wouldn't sift on any land the Texas owns. It's not legal
