How do you find out who owns a piece of land??

Hi,

Over the summer I started arrowhead hunting with my young son. We found a strip of roadway that has many farm fields on either side of the road. The fields have potential since on our first hunt ever, we found a point. A few weeks later, we were in one of the fields and a policeman called us over to his car. He asked if we had permission from the land owners to hunt the fields....we didn't.

Since Spring will soon be here and we want to start hunting again, I want to do it right and get the permision needed to hunt the fields.

How would you go about finding out who owns a plot of land?

I would go to my county clerks office & ask if they have a platt book for the county!

i stop at the farm closest to the field,if they dont own it they will know who does

go to www.farmandhomepublishers.com they likely have a plat book that will show you every parcel in the county and it will also list the name, adress and number of the owner. As a rural land owner, I get one sent to me free every year for my county and boy are they handy.

If you don't want to spend the money on the plat book, or can't get one as I don't believe they have the entire country covered yet, I'd take Jeffs advice and stop at the farm or home closest to the field.

Your county's official government website should have a way to navigate to a GIS Real Property look up page. My county has an interactive map showing property lines, ownership, dwellings and when it was first lived on. It also gives tax numbers and values.

A lot of the county courthouses have a PVA office that has a website with a GIS map on it showing the property bounderies and the owners. Really handy for research

Thanks for the info. I'm stuck 500 miles away from home due to work, but when I get home I now have some options to try.
