How do you go about knowing where you can detect and gain permission to dig?

I am obviously new to this hobby but want to find out as much as I can before I get myself in trouble. If anyone can steer me to a good resource it would be appreciated.

You may wanna get some practice finding and recovering targets before you start popping plugs from a strangers yard. The key is to make it look like you never dug there.

Start by doing an online search for your local town/county park rules. If you don't find something banning metal detecting, you are good to go there as long as you are careful to do clean recoveries without leaving a mess. As for gaining permission, that's on you to find property owners and go ask them.

Always start by digging in your own yard first. Practice until you can recover targets, and leave the ground looking the way you would be happy with if someone else was digging up your yard.
