HOW DO YOU USE AND APPLY DRILL HOLES?

I have read a few things on here about drill holes, and that the depth of one can tell you a distance to go. I also have read that by putting a stick in the drill hole you can get a heading. Is there any truth to this practice? We have a couple of drill holes involved in the trail we are working, and I would like to hear any ideas you guys might have as to what we could try.
