Edward Mallette, Melvin Jackson and Jermaine Smith are locked up after trying to steal copper from the Omni Source near the corner of Hill Avenue and Westwood.
Toledo Police Sergeant Chris Delaney says, "Probably 300 to 500 pounds of copper were taken off the truck."
It was an off-duty T.P.D. officer, hired to patrol Omni, who noticed the three men.
"He followed them.He had already called for marked units to help him identify these guys. They stopped the car and it was full of copper which had already been processed."
Police say the burglars broke in at Kripke Enterprises first, and then used bolt cutters to get inside Omni Source. The three men are charged with two counts of breaking and entering. Sergeant Delaney says right now with the cost of copper around $3 a pound, scrapping is becoming big business.
Thieves should take a lesson from these men. Police are watching and they will be caught. Police say more and more metal recycling companies are hiring off-duty police officers to patrol their properties.
