i agree any gold will do, i dunno about the dust tho, we should say tiny pickers are the smallest, unless its a jar/container of dust. kev nice going man. hey monty, you just jumped in during the cycle, it took how many pull tabs later to find that second gold? yes, this approach will work good.

This will be tough to figure! In my many years of detecting, I have found 80 gold rings. By all rights, and according to percentages of 1,000 tabs for every gold ring, I should have found somewhere in the vicinity of 80,000 tabs. Now, I have definitely found many, many thousands of tabs, but I think location has much to do with the percentages. I found many of those rings on ocean beaches during the winter months, without finding many tabs at all. Other places(soft sand summer beaches) contain many tabs and one would be lucky to get a ring.

I also hate to find tabs, and that caused me to push my discrimination too high at times. I would have long droughts between gold rings over the years. Those winter beaches helped me get my ring numbers up. In one 2 week period, I dug 14 of them, with almost no tabs.

location, location, location, and low discrimination.

Good luck!

Yep gonna have to rule out beach hunting for the simple fact that the Physics are such that there's no comparison between a Beach substrate vs say a clay soil substrate at your local park or school. The beach sand is in constant flux. Movement from wind water and other sources would skew any such numbers, not to mention the differences in densities of the two metals Gold and aluminum.

Great point MD! To come to any kind of conclusions, one would need to keep seperate records for different areas.

save up your aluminum tabs and other metal finds --sell em to the metal scrap dealers buy silver or gold --I call it metal upgrading ---same thing with junk clad coins too. upgrade em.

hi all i"v been quite interested in this post & have been keeping an eye on it since it started, hopefully in the next few months i"m going to start hunting for gold rings in the grassy areas in parks/tot lots i"m going to dig only targets in the gold range so should get plenty of tabs i usually hunt one day a week for 5-8 hours & may do a couple of small 2 hour hunts during the week after work.
i"ll keep ya posted

I like the last two pics, too bad it doesn't represent an actual Gold to Pull tab ratio. That would be sweet because it looks to be maybe 100-200 pull tabs to each gold. ::) :P ;D :tongue3:

I think were much more likely to find the ratio to be around 1500-2000 pull tabs per one gold. :-\

about 50% of the gold came outta the water which i find has a lower tab count the rest came from tot lots wich have a higher tab to gold ratio.

32 tabs today & 1 gold earring but no gold rings

41 more tabs 0 gold rings

This is embarrassing but I knew I'd have to admit it sooner or later:

After I had my detector for about a week I found a gold ring! I was walking to the post office to mail my income tax check :'( and saw it on the side of the road. :) Just a 10k no biggie--but no detector either. Kinda weird.

I wonder how many pull tabs would be in a 26 acre park dating back to the mid 1800's ;D Would I be the " King of Pull Tabs " ? ;D

NOPE! You would be king of blown out knees. :laughing9:

If I'm nugget shooting then I will get very few tabs. If I get a lot of tabs, then I will get very little gold in that area.

The question about how many tabs do you find before finding gold seems vague.

Ofcourse I'm referring to nuggets in the hills compared to gold jewelry. Big differents.

The whole concept of gold to pull tabs is skewed. If one is in an area where gold is lost more frequently then the ratio is low BUT if you dig every pull tab like me and have only found three gold rings in four years and thousands of pull tabs the ratio is super high. I know I can find the gold - all I've got to do is walk over with my detector but in has to be in the ground first. If gold doesn't get lost then no one will dig it up.

I hunted where there was a gold ring lost while working on heavey equipment, looked for two weeks no ring gaveup. A lot of welding, and metal work went on there.

Maybe if one of us can go back in time, and replace pull-tabs with gold, then we might stand a chance at finding a few rings. ;D

I think its like Muskie fishing. The Fish of 10,000 casts.

I decided to start digging nickel signals and up about a month ago and save the tabs to see how many I got before gold. Well, I started at a couple city parks and would hunt a couple hours at a time and come up with about 60 tabs each time alittle clad, but no gold! Then I started hunting a sports complex wich consists of 5 ball fields and each couple hour hunt I would dig maybe 5 tabs and 4 to 5 dollars in clad , and Ill take clad anyday over tabs! So 3rd or 4th hunt there I dug my first gold, and Ive probably got about 20 hours in at this place and so far about $30 in clad 3 silver rings (one plated), and 2 10kt gold rings! I figure ball fields are good cause every time a ball glove comes off, you never know it might take a ring with it. So far so good!!!!
