Here's my dilemma.....I always want to run out during lunch and hit a lot of the local parks but being an insurance agent, I am always in slacks or khaki pants and can not do my usual impression of being "one with the dirt" while MD'ing

Is there anyone else out there that during the week has to dress a little nicer but still finds a way to hit the more local sites closer to the office than home?

Should I just take a garden trowel and hit just the surface areas?? I would assume you could find good stuff occasionally within an inch or two of the surface at a park.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trey

Try knee pads and a moist towel in a bag.

There isn't a way to detect and stay clean. At least, I can't do it.

Get some thin coveralls... go have fun. Squat, don't knell. Wash your hands... LMAO...

I'm your man. I work as a controller and have to dress in slacks and button (usually white) shirts. Most of my detecting is on my lunch hour at a nearby park.

Get a pair of gardening gloves - the Wells Lamont knit nitrile with rubberized palms & fingers - lightest version (they come in three "weights").

Get a dispenser of Baby Wipes and keep them in the trunk.

Get one knee pad (optional) or cut a piece of carpeting, tire inner tube, etc. to kneel on or just learn to "hunker" if your balance is good.

Do not clean the coins until you get home. Just get a belt pouch (I use an AWP carpenters belt pouch & belt from Lowes) and drop the good finds in one of the deep inner pockets and the trash in the large outside pocket. Take off the pouch and leave it in the trunk as is when done. Take of the gloves, wipe hands with a Baby Wipe and back to work.

Don't forget a hat and note that a Rattler (one ear) headset is 50% cooler than a two-ear headphones set.

Your plugging technique (and soil type) can keep you cleaner, too. I have a square-tipped digger and jab in three slices, tip the sod plug maybe 2" deep away from myself and then use four jabs to form a "loaf" of dirt that I slide up. So far I haven't touched the soil except with my digger. Many times the coin is in the plug and the pinpointer finds it, and I just crumble the plug with the probe tip. Then there are the times it's a dig, poke around in the hole, dig, feel around, repeat. That's when you get dirty.

My shoes always look like I just came in from the barn . . . and since they look that way even when I don't detect after I collect the eggs and water the hens in the morning before work I just got so I don't give a d@m# anymore.

Thats part of the fun! lol

I don't know how I manage to do it but I only get my hands dirty, never pants or other clothes. :icon_scratch:
Oh yes I squat and can go out with my usual clothing (student) and only need to wash my hands.
(and no I'm not shy for getting down and 'dirty'.)

carpenters belt pouch is excellent especially those in leather, you can use them forever.

About the shoes; I can "clean" my hands in the grass (if not to dry) then wipe my shoes with my hands.
Or take an extra pair with you.

Trey I sure would like to see someone in such a fine "outfit" MD'ing talk about giving use TH'ers a new face! lol
Keep up the good work!

I have been out wearing a dark tie and Oxfords detecting more than once. :D

I can tell you it draws more respect than cutoff jeans and Tevas. But that's 'cause no one figures a businessman would be just out digging clad cents when he could be getting his three-martini lunch down instead.

Happily new owners allow dockers and golf shirts. Waaay nicer to detect in.

lol! Charlie: I like your style! :occasion14:

Cheers pal.

Eu

Buy a mechanic one piece coverall (from a uniform shop), is one option. Might be a little pricey, but you will never have to buy a new one.

Another option is to goto a local paint store (home or auto) and buy several of the white paint suits (made of paper). These may last several times, and then you throw it away.

get a spray can of paint, get a hit, paint an x, go back after work and get down and dirty--- :icon_jokercolor:

I do basically the same . nitile rubberized gloves, baby wipes and knee pad or car mat. for a pouch I use a 2 pocket zippered type for muzzle loader accessories.I use the big pocket for trash and the smaller , upfront one for my treasures( need more room for the pull tabs :D) the 1 I use has a "d ring" type clip for belt loops or a velcro type belt loop. just undo the velcro and slide behind the belt , throw on the gloves and your ready to go. I also keep a 1 gal ice cream pail in my trunk for the junk . Another idea you might try, take whichever advice you think might work better, and use it on your day off or in the yard to see what works best in your yard. side note all your deep signals could wait till you get off work.
I've been known to MD after church in my Ralph Lauren suits.

I carry sanitized jell with me at all times. It is great for cleaning your hands. I also suggest you take something to clean your fingernails. I've tried all kinds of knee pads and found the best for me are those used for roller skating. In hot weather wear a sweat band around your head. And of course baby wipes to wipe off your face after a hunt.
