Spikes are notoriously hard to date.
The style of the head on those makes me think 1800's
But don't take that to the bank

Thanks GB. I wish I had dug them up on a beach, but the thing does look great hanging on the wall in my living room.

I bet they do.
I would have bought them also

Whoever made it did a nice job. He didn't "overclean" the spikes, leaving them with that aged look. The wood (teak? not sure) is nicely finished and varnished to bring out the wood grain. He used clear epoxy to mount the spikes, and installed a hanging wire with two small nails on the back. You could easily make one with some of your spikes.

It's a neat idea.
I like having the ability to pick up and hold things from time to time so I tend not to mount things.. If they're ever removed there's usually damage to the patina at least.
Thanks for the look though.

Depending on where they spent their time.. Their look even uncleaned can be a whole lot different.
The small ones in the second photo where in a black crust that popped right off when I squeezed it

Did you clean them at all, or is that the way they looked when you dug them up?

Very nice finds, I hope I find some like that.

These were shiny like they were brand new when I first popped them out of that crust.. They're a bit darker now.
I haven't really cleaned them but since they came out the way they did I've kept them from tarnishing too much

Nice ship spikes!

Found these yesterday 1715 fleet

If you don't mind me asking are you on the north or south end?.. Or near the ballast pile?
