This is a recent find. This flat button is a little bigger than a nickel. There is no shank or backmark. I've found alot of flat buttons but none with an anchor on it like this. What country is this from and how old? It is a little bent. Should I try to flatten it or let it alone? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for looking! DD.

That is a design that was used very early. The button book shows them at about 1800. It looks like the military version, but there have been many blazer buttons like that.

The rope extending a long way BENEATH the anchor is a distinctive design, which I knew I'd seen somewhere before. So I checked my button-books for you. According to the Albert button-book, it is a British Royal Navy Captain's button, from 1774 to 1787. See button BNH-4 in that book.

Dave,
In case you don't have Alberts book, here is a scan of the page. Click on the pics for a larger size.
