How to date old axe heads?

I have found 2 old AXE HEADS this year one in my yard where 1866 coins have been found and a bigger one in a feild where an old school house from the 1870s was.

I am going to run them on my wifes dads grinder that has a wire wheel, to see if there are any markings

any imput? also found 2 Iron log splitters

I'd be careful using a wire wheel. If the markings are faint it might scour them off.

I would recommend electrolysis above the grinder. The others are right. That grinder will just any markings right off.
