How to modify dx5000 with headphones.

Hello. New to site and new to hobby.
I just picked up a Treasure Tracker DX5000 at a thrift store for $7.
I think it would be great fun for me and my 6-year-old godson to mess around with in the yard.
However, I would like to modify it so I can plug some 3.5mm earbuds into it when I use it. There is no headphone jack.
I would like this mod to disable the speaker when I use the headphones.
I am good with a soldering iron and mechanics in general, I just don't understand the electrical details and don't want to blow up the earbuds or my eardrums.
Any advice on this would be appreciated, and I hope to get a better MD in the future.

Come on guys and gals. I know someone has done this mod or knows how to. Maybe the lack of replies tells me I should get a better detector.
