How To Tell If A Coin Is Cleaned

Can tell if a coin was soaked in baking soda?

On my silver coins and wheat cents, I usually soak them a few days with a few drops of DAWN LIQUID SOAP with hot water in a Rx bottle, shaken every time I might pass the sink in the bathroom. It removes the greasy touch of the coin and cleans them up (not polished).

Good information, Thank You for sharing! :icon_thumleft:

Some good technetics.

I would think that most circulated coins have been cleaned at one point or another. I can see how cleaning can hurt the value of an uncirculated coin, but I dont see how it can destroy the value of a filthy dirty circulated coin.

After I purchase a coin for my collection, I clean it immediately. I dont like germs and filth.

It's just that cleaning removes silver so it removes some fineness from the details. I wouldn't think wiping them off once or twice gently would hurt anything. Aggressive repeated cleanings or an abrasive wouldn't be good.
Copper and silver are both antibacterial.
