This happened yesterday but is still worth posting in my opinion. Fellow tnet member uscgdavis and I went out to a small park in our area that we’ve hit several times. I’ve popped a couple silvers and he had popped a gold ring and some old coins as well. We decided to hit an area we’d had a decent amount of success while using the 4kHz setting on our Nox 800s. Well low and behold, we were still pulling up coins that we missed. So we knew there was still stuff there.

I got a decent sounding 30-31 that rang as a high tone, so I figured I’d give it a shot. Only 3 inches down and this beauty pops out ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1598116562.653752.webp

It’s an 1886 V Nickel! Only 3 million were minted! I was so shocked. This park we were at was at the oldest maybe from the early 1910s or late 1910s. And for the coin to be only 3 inches down and routinely missed by people who I know have detected that exact spot is unbelievable to me.

Also pulled a merc, and 3 wheats. The Nox never fails to impress me!ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1598116697.201820.webp

Many people notch out nickels area to avoid digging junk.

My parks are full of mid tones, you could spend a lifetime digging them all.

High tones are hard to find

awesome rare v-nick. such a shame it's not in better condition, but not too bad for free :icon_thumleft:

I may try looking for some coppers now you have mentioned this. There is a lot of things that effect coils but most do not dig mid tones. When I dig, the deeper and iffy the more I like it.

Nobody gets it all. Congrats!:hello2:

Congrats on a low mint Liberty V nickel. I seldom find Liberty V nickels, let alone the rare ones. Nice silver too.

Congrats for finding the 2nd rarest V-nickel!!

Soil condition may have something to do with it. I've found that I can hit a place I've hammered again just after the rain and all kinds of new stuff pops up. I think soil humidity plays a role.

If you got a 30-31 I.D., I suspect there was something else in the hole with the nickel.

I love mid tones, all sorts of cool stuff down there

That's why I dig low - mid tones ! Nice V Nickel find.

I like mid tones, too, but this one rang in high tone. I have done this as well, supertuning the AT Pro will get deeper stuff and change mid's to high's. Including pull tabs.

Congratulations on you very nice SCORE!

Great finds, Congrats! On the days I decide to dig all the low and mid tones, (pulltab city) something good usually surfaces!

Great additional finds, nice job there, especially the key date V nickel!!…….I am not guilty of notching out the low/mid tones but I am guilty of not digging many of them.....the depth of a target and the location I'm hunting (woods vs. lawn) has a lot to do with whether I will dig it or not.....I mean, I know what a bottlecap at 1 inch sounds like.....hell, I have even turned up my nose to zinc cents and have not dug them for years now.....cherry picking at it's finest I suppose.....this may have cost me some finds over the years but my knees are my friends :-)

HH all!

Greg
