Dug near edge of a flowing stream in an historical area near a number of early and long gone mills from the mid 19th century.

A massive heavy iron relic measuring 11 inches long and nicely tapered from 1.25 inches to 2 inches at the top.

Was used for something--exactly what?? Help and thanks!!

Was the end sticking out of the ground? The top 3 inches are far less corrored than the rest.

This might give a clue about it's use. Maybe on the water wheel or race dam... Just guessing...

It could be a stop or brake for a millstone or water wheel. To bad the mill isnt to old,you may come across the mill stone.Theres quite a few old mill sites near me,dating back to the 1600s.One even has the millstone laying in the creek, good luck though hauling a 1500 or so pound stone out of the woods:laughing7:

Thank you all for your help. Am going to contact a local historical mill site and speak to its curator.
