All Treasure Hunting
Was going through my deceased grandparents' estate and found a heavy, rusted shut cookie tin. What could be in here? Little shake, CLINK CLINK. COINS! I pried it open and poured out bags of Silver Kennedys! YES! Here are the totals: 103 '68 D; 73 '67; 33 '69 D; one '66; and 4 90% '64. 214 total coins, $112 in face value, and $774.90 in silver melt. My grandparents had never told me about this, but living through the Depression and WWII in Belgium, this doesn't surprise me. Some people think cleaning out estates is hard work, but for me it's a constant treasure hunt. One of my best finds yet!

Very nice indeed, I hope you don't melt them, lol. That must have been so exciting finding them and looking at all of them. I would be days reserching them and trying to get grades and values on them. Congrats on your find, good for you.

I inherited an estate in 2008. Piece of advice that was given to me in advance and paid off. Check for money everywhere as the folks that lived during the depression hide it all over. I found bills in suit jacket pockets, shirt pockets. The safety pin was a tool of choice pinning bills under the edges of the wall to wall carpet, behind curtains and pictures. A couple of small dolls had 100's pinned under the skirts. And don't forget the cupboard and open containers and bags.

Thanks everyone. I don't think I will melt them. Gotta find the time to sort them all out. Yes, it's true, I have found money all over the house, just not in this amount. I'm just scratching the surface in cleaning the house. When I really start moving everything out I will be careful. Who knows where they could've hid stuff.

what other sorts of bits-and-bobs are you finding (?) - did they hoard unusual things too (?) - sometimes the really weird stuff is worth the most...

Why couldn't my grandmother had done this!?

Very cool to find the cache of silver cash! :hello2: As you continue to sort our their house, check INSIDE lamps and clocks -- my mom & dad kept small things inside theirs so as not to lose the items. Your grandparents left you a wonderful treasure hunt including silver coins but also I'm sure some happy memories. HAVE FUN! Andi

I'm sure they've hidden other stashes of money. Unfortunately, the other things they hoarded were food items, plastic containers, personal hygiene products etc. Being from the Depression and never having enough, they stock piled this stuff when they came to the U.S. I have found a few other old items such as fruit jars, old toys, a WWI service medal from New York, and a whole bunch more I can't remember.

Thank you! I will check. It is sad to look through stuff because they're gone, but I can remember them through it.

Great find! I've heard on the coin forums that the 40% silver halves were usually not hoarded in the past, so it's a good thing that your grandparents decided to do so!

Yeah, I'm not sure why they did. They're general belief was a coin was a coin. They didn't care about collectibility or anything. But I'm sure thankful they kept these.

Be sure to check any books. Many hide bills in the pages.

WTG, grandparents are awesome!!!!

Wow that's a pile of silver..

During hard times each of those coins would represent a days work and would pay for a meal for two. Can you imagine how proud she felt every time she put one back!

Very nice surprise indeed finding the halves, one never knows until it's all over in the search.

I remember an estate sale and flipping through a book and a gold eagle coin fell out of the binding, it was game on for the next few hours helping the shocked woman search through the other books.
