It's the end of a scabbard for a sword but it has been altered it looks like.

Appears to perhaps be from a Model 1840 non-commissioned officers sword scabbard. These were made before , during and after the civil war. http://arms2armor.com/store/product1337.html

However, we should wait for confirmation on that from someone who knows these items well, as with my limited knowledge I could be missing something obvious to an expert.

It is definitely the tip to a leather scabbard, and does appear to be 19th century. Id'ing to a particular type will not be easy though, as many scabbards had a similat tip. Cool find!

Nhbenz got it right - and so did NOLA Ken. Being brass, it is most probably from a US Model-1840 Non-Commissioned Officer's sword scabbard -- or the Musician's version of that sword, which used the same scabbard. The Model-1860 is similar but made of iron. The specific name for the part you found is the scabbard's "drag."
