Was just wondering i see everyone on here detecting on civil war sites and stuff and was wondering if it was legal? I live close to an old Wells Fargo robbery site where 40,000 in gold bars are hid in the woods or close to town anyways i get worried if i drive up this road where this incident took place BLM or Fish and Game will be on me like a fly on?!@# because if you disturb a leaf you have to worry about going to prison seems like the government takes the fun out of recreational activities lol

Many civil war campsites are located on owned property by people, not big organizations. Just getting the go-ahead from the landowner and you are free and clear.

ncali,

As R&R stated, not all Civil War sites are government land. Gov't owned parks and land in Virginia are protected by law and you can be arrested for hunting on them with an MD or removing any relics or artifacts (found with an MD or not). But MANY areas are private land can be hunted with the owner's permission. Remember, relics are not only found on battlefield sites, but also in the areas where soldiers camped. Battles were occasional, but armies had to camp somewhere EVERY DAY. That means theres alot more encampment sites than battlefields.

If the place you want to search is private, find the owner and ask. If it is state land, you'll have to check the law as it varies from state to state.

Good luck,
