Hi Guys,

From some of you old timers who have been in Europe. I'm getting the new Rover UC walking stick model detector. It's called UC (Under Cover) because it's made to look like a walking/hiking pole and feeds information to my cell phone. This way I don't get hauled away and stuck in a foreign prison! My question is this. Sicily, where I'm stationed, is filled with old castles & villas from Roman times, Greek times, Norman times, all times! If I find something am I required to report it to the government then get in trouble for detecting, or do I seek permission first, which they will never grant?

As far as i know you're required to report ALL finds to the Italian authorities. If worth anything then you get a 1/4 of value payment. However, like here in Sweden, Sicily has a detecting ban, so apart from on the beach you're risking serious trouble. From the choice of your detector it seems you're determined to do it whatever, which is your choice. Gives the hobby a bad name though! :tongue3:

find a country you can hunt in

yeah man watch out. :o - TDY back to the states and hunt here - or request a transfer to Germany or someplace you can really hunt. your going to get in to trouble with your unit if you get caught and get arrested in Italy. best to buy a 'real' detector and relax and enjoy it (even if it means a few hours in the car driving some place you can legally detect. nothing is worth getting arrested overseas. tread lightly... :dontknow:
