Detector(s) used
XP Deus II v0.6 with 11" Coil
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Do you ever have a bad day?:icon_scratch::icon_scratch: (Hard to remember )

Once again our predictions were off, as we fired for a 3 hammered day.:metaldetector:
Conditions were perfect with the soil on top dry & wet underneath & high temperatures.
I decided to finish off a corner we had left after Day 1, as it turned out it was a real hot-spot. It seemed every dig was a GPS plot!
5 Hours gridding produced;

18th C Silver Button Top
2 Crotal Bells - 1 made by William Gwynn in the Aldbourne Foundry in circa 1790.
Late Medieval Pot Handle (heart shaped thing) - Might be our first complete one, or maybe the 2nd.???
Medieval Lead Weights
Medieval Buckles
Some 19th C pressed copper with a Crown over 'APPROVED'
4 Jettons
1 Lead Token
Roman Disc Brooch
18th C Child's Spur
Tudor Clothes Fastener
VERY RARE Annular Brooch with Latin Inscription (only 5 with writing are recorded on the PAS & this is the best one!)
5 Hammered:
  • Ed I London
  • Ed I Canterbury
  • Ed I London (in nice condition!)
  • Tiny broken Short-Cross Cut Half-penny
  • SCARCE Ed I Berwick-on-Tweed
This is why we do this.:laughing7:

So what makes you think your way is better than anything else. I can bet a 20 dollar 3G smart phone with the free apps can be used to record all imfo in a minute .Anyone can spot scattering in a empty crop field . We did run run and grid grid in 5000 square miles in 2. Hours. All sounds quite bazaar . If you follow the crop lines theres no need to grid. TP

We drove past this field for about 10 years & the previous detectorist who pretty much only tried this field, gave up without finding it. We nearly gave up without finding it as well, because it was in the least obvious place. The field had a nice Church on top of the hill with a nice Plato, nothing on or by it!
We use Archie intel & crop-marks to find our sites. No point doing what most do & wander empty fields, at least 85% are. The intel on this missing Medieval site written by the Archies/Historians was WRONG. We have re-written the local history for this site & put it on the map in the RIGHT spot.

PS. I don't own a Mobile & nor do I want to. Cru'dad has a phone but only for calls, not a smart one. We are happy with old school, it works just fine. A smart-phone would shave a few minutes off the recording, but not enough that I'm bothered. Also, just because your phone is smart doesn't mean the users is. It still takes years of experience to read some of the clues we track down.

PPS. Sometimes you need to grid against the lines which is what we were doing. But your right in areas where I'm going with the lines, I need no flags.

Yeap, it's by far the best example out of the 5 I've seen recorded on the PAS.
We maybe able to make out the Bible reference that would have protected the wearer from the Evil Eye!

Incredible piece! It probably has no shot at BANNER because it’s not a shiny old gold coin or early silver piece but I recognize just how amazing that brooch is. I’ll be waiting to see if you can make out the reference. Congrats on a hell of a piece

You're obviously doing it right, well done, from a fellow Brit.

Awesome finds!! I was re-watching some episodes of "The Detectorist" this weekend and thought about you and Crudad!! Do you hunt the same region of England that is in the show?

Such a great day! Wow. Love those jettons and hammered!

Pretty much, but notice they only did grassland which is only our last resort.

Cheers mate. Our silver streak came to an end today, but we did ok. Will post much later.....

Man that brooch is to cool! Please update if you manage to translate :occasion14:

Great post CRU

UPDATE:

Cru'dad thinks;

''The inscription on the Brooch may be a play on what became a popular text for later Posies or Posy rings which was something like this:

IO SUI DE DRVERIE / NE ME DVNE MIE which translates like: I AM A LOVE TOKEN/NEVER GIVE ME AWAY.''

Therefore, instead of the Bible quote that I thought was most likely it's a love token from a 13th C man to a woman!
