Well this morning started out about 9°I let it climb to 15° and headed to the lake.My last visit here produced a small gouge...I was there about 5 minutes and found a nice flake knife.I used a little hot coffee and was able to break free.About 5 minutes later I walked up on this gouge. With having to use most of my coffee on the last extraction.I had to leave drive about five miles to the store and have them fill me a jug of hot water....She's a little banged up but she's full channeled and whatever material it is its banded....This ones for you rock........mjm IMG_20141230_095808_166.webp

Wow, yes, you are the gouge man. Another very cool find, the blade is nice as well. Great insitu and story also, thanks for the view.

Made me laugh when I read that. That's great you found another keeper. I don't advise everyone to use this trick but I carry a flathead screwdriver to help pop them out when they are stuck. If you aren't careful you can scratch the artifacts but it sure is easier to free them. You just have to go about an inch away from them then get under it and pop it up. Just don't fall while it is in your pocket.

I do the same rock but not on this one.The ground was so frozen.I won't go into detail on one of the ways I tried to extract it.I tell my Buddy's after they have handled it.Man the looks are priceless.....Hey sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do....mjm..its possible that gouge might be petrified wood.We will see.

Gouges are one thing I have never seen this far south, makes you wonder why. I guess they just used Adezs:dontknow:Great find.

Yeah Im sure we all use those type of secret ways to clean or defrost stuff sometimes :laughing7:

Score! Very cool stuff- I love that gouge and material! HH! Yakker

I don't know what type of canoes were used in Mississippi. Here in maine large dug outs were made. This is where the gouge was thought to be mainly utilized. As the lighter easier made birch bark canoe took over the gouge pretty much disappeared. These cats took these dug outs swordfish hunting.Doubting that was a practice used by folks down your way.I guess like everything else it was a tool made out of necessity.... mjm

Nice tool it is. We have some here but moistly adze, chisel and ax types not many gouge type tools here that I know of. I always enjoy seeing the ones you find.

Frozen in time. Well until you came along. Glad it surfaced for you. Nice save. You are the gouge man!
