"It ain't the detector its the man behind it"

Not so on the beach when comparing a ace 250 to a sov gt. I could go on and on but explaining the difference between the two and and the rock solid performance on the beach with the sov is pretty much preaching to the choir around here so I will spare everyone.

Lets see...100 plus hours on the beach with ace 250 yields a bunch of recent clad and a badly tarnished silver ring and hours of aggravation attempting to hunt wet sand with constant falseing.

Now 25 minutes with sov gt (literally; this is no exageration) and I found my first ring. Of course I know there is a luck factor here but to be honest I doubt I would have found it in the wet where I did if I had been swinging the ace. I am vary pleased I decided to sell the ace and upgrade to the sov. I dug a penny today at ten plus inches also.

Bad pic but ring is silver with some kind of large pink gem in the center and small diamond looking stones on each side. 925 stamp and IO NV stamp, whatever that means?

Glad to hear you can now hunt the wet sand. Nice ring. Have it checked out for the type of stone and to see if the smaller stones are real diamonds.

Yep...knew about the 925 and silver. The IO NV stamp has me puzzled though.

It is really hard for me to contain my enthusiasm where the GT is concerned. Sens can be cranked up no problem in the wet and I didn't even have to use the pinpoint. Targets could be easily xed out within a inch or two without the use of pinpoint. Also took to the slower sweep speed that is recommended with this machine a lot quicker than I thought I would.

Of course the GTs arrival coincided with an increase of my work so I probably wont have another trip to the beach until Sunday. Have a feeling I will be more than ready to hit the sand.

Welcome to the wonderful world of hunting beaches with a Minelab. ;D

I always take both my Excal and my Sovereign everytime I go to the beach, most times I use both, unless the water is like glass, then I try to consentrate on the sandbars off shore. Rare to be like glass on the Atlantic side of Fla.

Murph, when you get the chance add a WOT to the Sov, I love mine. You will cover more area quicker, and I think deeper. I pulled a nice bangle bracelet at waters edge right in front of a cute lifeguard that was 3 scoops deep, and I have a huge scoop, takes deep bites. I had no tape measure, put it had to be 12+ inches deep. Lifeguard was watching and when the bracelet fell out when i dumped 3rd scoop on the beach she says, "you guys really do find jewelry! :o"

Shot in the dark..... the stone looks like an opal and opals are found in Nevada or NV. No clue on the IO.

Let me take my own shot in the dark. For IO; imitation opal and NV; not valuable ;D

I still ain't complaining though.

theres no comparison between an low end detector and a highend detector. its delusion to think so. since buying my excal I've been making find after find and some VERY deep! Sov's and Excals are rock solid powerhouse detectors!

I don't know! I hunted the wet sand since the late 70's with many different machines(including the original freedom ace). Some worked better than others(except the Heathkit...dry ground only) and I had to learn to use them through all the chatter.

Of course, those were all analog machines, so I can't make a comparison with the digital units, which may be too exact and precise. My favorite wet sand unit had a manual sensitivity control and a metal/mineral/threshold knob.

Does anyone still make a fully manual machine these days?

Yes, there is no questioning the fact that there is no comparison between low end and high end machines and we shouldn't waste time even trying to compare. We all need to learn as much as we can about the units we can afford. No one should think that just because someone is on the beach with a top of the line unit with the giant coil, that you might as well turn around and go home. Patience is such a huge part of this hobby and most of us don't realize it. In various situations, patience is better than the best machine on the market.

I don't mean this as a rant, but as encouragement to any of us that are using the less expensive units.

There is a cubic zirconia stone called pink ice. Also some glass stones are exposed to a fire treatment that gives the surface a rainbow effect.

Nice ring! Sounds like you will be very happy with your new machine! Good luck!.............HH

I would never cast despersions on anyone using a low end machine, agreed that work with what you can afford, more power to you. But consider this, many rings and valuables are way down there and in conditions that a low end machine just cant pick up yet a high end, sov /excal/fisher etc and others can. Nothing is more frustrating than missing a nice item because of a machines limitations. When I bought my excal I started finding more good stuff to more than pay for my higher investment within weeks. One find alone was in the $400 range, half ounce of pure gold. It was 18" down! proof is in the pudding and the minelabs deliver over and over again. theres a reason their so popular.

Another thing to consider is that gold has surpased $700 an ounce or roughly 31 grams per ounce..typical ring has 1 to 2 grams of pure gold in it. so it does'nt take long for your finds to pay for a high end detector. theres a hidden high price to pay with using a low end machine in my book every time you go out. If I'm going to expend the time, money and energy to hunt then i want to give myself the best edge i can to find the good stuff..gold/silver.......make the hunt a rewarding as possible. HH
