I did try and look for an answer but all I found was more of the same question

I've detected on public school yards in various places across the country without any problems. Just don't do it when school is in session and don't leave holes and trash. Try to leave the area looking like you'd never been there. If it would let you breath a little easier, ask the local police department if there are any laws against MDing in town and on the school grounds. They should know.

a lot depends on where you live also. some big cities dont allow you on the property period. small towns most could care less if you do as was stated above. keep it clean and dont leave holes. but if ever in doubt find the administration building for the public schools in the area and seek permission.

thank you that was very helpful .

vickilynn, if the school yard is open to other users after-school-hours, like joggers, basketball, kite-flyers, etc.... then consider yourself no different than them. Just be discreet, don't leave any indications of your presence, etc... Don't be "in the middle of a hole" if someone approaches, because the pyschology works like this: YOU may know you intended to tity it all up, so that you'd leave no indications, but to a busy-body, all they see is the mid-process, in their mind. Kind of like nose-picking: no one will mind, but just don't do it in front of people ::)

vickilynn, talk to the school superintendant. get written permission. our active school is a no-go but every old one except one 1800's, i have been on. i'll get that one too!

flyinguy, what is your success rate on not only getting permission from school superintendents, but then turning around and asking them to "put that in writing"? I'd be afraid of getting "no's", when in fact, no one really would've cared or paid any mind.

Contact the principal as follows:

Hi, I'd like to yada yada yada, and I'll turn over anything of historical interest, other than coins, to the school, PTSA, or local historical society, etc. Good chance of finding school rings, etc. Solve missing items cases, etc etc. Gives history teachers talking points about the science of archeology and physics teachers talking points too.

tom, i've only hunted 3 public schools in the area and have written perm. on all. i have to go when no one is around or stay far away from any events. i really prefer the old time schools like the 1800s,early 1900s. they are privately owned and i think, a lot better hunting. no one to bother you. i'm not one to argue over the right to hunt a property and if they don't want me there i don't care. i've got so many other spots. out of several hundred times i've asked permission, i have been refused twice. both said " i'm getting a machine and do it myself" okay.
