Found about 2' underground in a 17th to mid 18th century trash pit. The dime is shown for comparison. Either a tooth or claw, either way, a BIG critter! Any ideas what kind of creature used to own this?

Possibly a chompasaurus!

Pig may be it. I think it's too small for a horsie. I'll take it to my vet, they'll let me know, and hopefully won't charge me an office visit. har har har

Against the wind, wow, that signal was imaginary!

Black Bart, thanks. I'm waiting on my digging partner from yesterday to post his stuff before I put my 2 cents in. He nailed the sidewall of the pit and did hugely well. (I get credit for suggesting where to dig). In the rain, of course.

Madmox, good idea. Only my vet knows for sure? It's so windy tonight, I may or may not venture out tomorrow! I HATE the high winds.

I may not have seen it, but I probably did.

I have looked at all the animal teeth I could on the net. This tooth does not have that ridge in the middle like a horse's tooth, unless I'm looking at it upside down.

My friend's dog gave me a big grin, but this tooth is too big and this dog is about 80-90 pounds. He is Huge.

Whatever it is I would grow eyes in the back of my head, Keep that safety off

Fortunately A2coins, this critter has been dead over 300 years.

Thinking the pointy part goes into jaw. Looks like a veggie eater front tooth. Horse, deer

black bear was a staple food for American's for a long long time - most likely black bear IMO

Thanks for the replies all. We only found one and it was in a fire pit with oyster shells and other used to be tasty things.
