I have a WW1 button that needs cleaning. Ultra sonic cleaner safe?

I have a WW1 button from a WW1 training camp in my area. It is flaking off at the sides. I have not removed any dirt. If I put it in an ultra sonic cleaner will it take the top layer of the button off?
