As you might be able to see in the photos, the black ring appears to be very dense and has what appears to be some very small cracks or fissures running out from the center. In the center are two hollow tapering cavities, each with brown walls. You can see the outline of them inside the black ring. There might also be a thin brown wall around the outside of the black ring.

The last photo shows the item with one side removed and opened like book pages so you can see the two halves of each of the two hollow cavities inside the item. I think the bottom (opposite the black ring) might be broken off.

I have no idea what this is. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

IRS...(sorry no offense intended) a very nice piece!

I am no expert, but have been looking this stuff over lately. Unclear on the external rock/material, but
it looks like flint (inside circle anyway) which is filled with crystallised calcite. Do a little research (just google it) on flint/chert and see if you don't agree.

Best,
BW

looks like petrified wood to me especially the last pic.

Thanks for both ideas. I've been looking into flint and chert and now will look into pertrified wood as well.

The two cavities in the middle intrigue me. I don't think I mentioned, it was found on a central Florida Atlantic coast beach, if that is any help.

Thanks guys.

Hmmmm. Thanks. I don't have it figured out yet.

Possibly a large root of a tooth which the nerve canals are a different density than the outer surfaces? Just a guess....
