Being lead I'm thinking a battery terminal link of some kind. Maybe to hook up a series of batteries ??? My other hunch an electrical fuse link ???

It very well could be,but I thought it looked older then that due to the fact that its so white in color..And I know civil war bullets are white when dug so I kinda thought it maybe that era..but I could be wrong.

Imo,I think Brokenknee is on to somthing. It looks like it had two loops at one time,I am sure they used stuff like the example he posted back in them days as well.

Two loops (one on each end) and I'd go with it being a handmade rope/cord tensioner, maybe for a tent. Definitely appears to be lead, I'd say CW era if nothing else.

Interesting find in any case.
