Found this in my yard, it was about 12" deep. It is approximately 2.5" long and 1" wide. It appears to be made from either copper or brass (due to the green patina), but the nub is iron, based on the corrosion. My house was once on farmland. Is it a tooth off an old plow? Do plows even have teeth? I am from suburban Philadelphia, excuse my farm ignorance.

Not any type of plow the metal would have been to soft.It looks like some type of pointer possibly from a dial.

I think it is from a "chalkline"... or larger tape measure... 50 ft + reel.

Until I read and saw the picture of the tape measure, I was thinking closure like the military uses, only backwards from the military use. The brass would be on the flap, the knob pointing in to attach to leather slit or something like that.

This could be anything that deals with "winding" or "reeling"
Most of the measure reel handles are hinged... so It could be anything similar... in function "winding"... Even a clock perhaps...
A small fishing reel ?
An anything.

Could you post a "reference item" for a size comparison in a pic please ... ?

IE: A dime or quarter

It could be a variation of a pail handle hinge for an antique metal, leather, or wooden pail. I have dug several types myself. Always fun to dig brass! Sub 8-)
