Have been very busy with work and other
projects. Not been able to get out much.

As many know, I love walking in the woods
and finding................. anything. I'm not really
a coin shooter.

So.......................

Have to get into work today at midnight so out
early so I can catch a nap this afternoon/evening.

Two weeks ago I was in the woods and found a
1940 wheat and a 1942 dime in a small area.
Said to myself, "why here?"

Went to the same location for a few hours yesterday
and came up with a 192? wheat and a 1935 buffalo
nickel. ;D

Today I thought I'd do a bit more in the area.
Think its a 191? wheat and a 1912 V nickel.

I know this area, did a lot of research on it, but
nothing says in the small spot I'm working that
anything special went on. Also seems funny that
there is very little junk, mostly the round outer rims from
old cans; no clad at all. :-\ Bit of old glass shards.

Have no idea why these coins are in the area. :-\
But I'll take them ;D ;)

v1 (Small).webp

v2 (Small).webp

all have a good un.............

I don't know why either Sherm, but heck, why ask why?????

Actually If I may ask....Why were you detecting there???? And I am not trying to be a smarta$$, just curious. I mean we all have a reason to dig certain spots and yours seem to turn up some sweet stuff for sure!

Nashoba,

about 3 mile sq area that is very rich in history
of this area; first explorers, old reports of finding an
old fort(written but now lost), last Indian village in
the area; early settlers.

I have been in this area and check out different spots.
Me, I like finding artifacts, bottles, and such but coins are not my thing.
Come across one now and than and am happy. But these popped
up while I was scouting an area, happy to be out in woods and
swing the machine. This ridge was just a way of getting
through the area which is a bit wet.

So I would say I was at this part of the area using it
as a passage when I hit the first silver.

Just trying to put the pieces of together. Got one
IH about 3/4 of a miles from this ridge on an old farm.

Just seems extra interesting because of the amount of
coins, 6 so far, and this small ridge holding them all.

Hope that explaines it.

But perhaps the best answer would be:
"Because it is there" ;D ;)

have a good un....

Skrimpy,
Property was farm field; owners house and
outbuilding were across and down the road
about a 1/4 mile...
Could be stuff the farmer dropped.

In the 1940's the property was
taken over, (sold to), the forest preserve
district. By the dates of the coins it just seems
that something was going on prior to the takeover
by the forest preserve district...
Good possibility there is some sort of old hiking route here that probably wouldn't be listed in the historical writings. It's possible that stuff was dropped AFTER the preserve bought the land and people were hiking there. We still once and a while see some old coins in circulation here, although they get scooped up as soon as someone realizes they are different but don't know which ones are key. Could be something like that going on there.

Could be some sort of early picnic grove or
meeting spot but I cannot find anything written
about anything being there...
Possible, but you're right. If it were a picnic grove, even turn of the century you would be finding other trash when you dig, nails, bottles, glass, buttons etc and you would find a reference to it in an old newspaper, or in an old map.

The fact that it is just a small ridge,
if you put an old road down the center not much room
would be left for a big get together...
Dig into that ridge a little and you might find an old stone wall. If there were an old road with not a lot of room for a big get togethers but there were someplace to sit maybe a popular spot to sit for a rest on a long walk/have a picnic minus the large groups.

Perhaps just an old get together place for the local lads of the period.
But six older coins in the small area just seems like
a lot. The ridge has older trees than the surrounding
area.
I think your best bet. If the land is wet there may have been some kind of pond or something long since dried up or filled in, or just the big trees around were places to play or sit in the shade. In any event, keep digging there until you get a look at some more stuff. If you start seeing lots of coins you know it has to be some sort of picnic area/gathering place, and if you start to find lots of glass you know it's some kind of dump.

Great coins Sherm, I am like you in that the coins are fun to dig but I am into the relics. I do a bunch of scouting like you do and sometimes I cover a lot of ground just getting a feel for whats there, trash, bottle dumps and so on. I hope you can pull a few more out. Tsgman

Often the hunt is more important than
the finds. Have to love it :)

Precisely what I thought. Dang man that area sounds awesome. I envy you that. Anything with any historical sigificance up here is so off limits it isn't even funny!
I sure enjoy looking at your digs though so keep on posting them. I dont think I have missed a single thing you have posted since I have been on this site!

Take care and happy hunting.

P.S. Sweet V BTW~~~~~~
