First ever post- I just joined. Found this in my backyard, about 2 inches under the dirt surface. My property is in a 20 yr old subdivision in Chatham County, NC. Census records show that this property was occupied since at least 1850. I have found old nails and horseshoes in the past. The hole opening in the "handle" is about 3/8" across. Any ideas on what this may be? Thank you! 1-IMG_6328.webp2-IMG_6329.webp3-IMG_6330.webp

First off, welcome to Tnet Rob.

Based on how the wire is bent, my first thought was fence wire, possibly from an electrified fence. :icon_scratch:
Hopefully, another member will recognize this style and be able to give you a more definite I.D.

I think Dave is close. Does look like a type of fence anchor?

Greetings! Any evidence that the hole was threaded?

Maybe part of a braided wire rug beater.

Thanks to all who have weighed in so far!

Not easy to see inside the narrow opening, but yes, it appears to be threaded.
