First ever post- I just joined. Found this in my backyard, about 2 inches under the dirt surface. My property is in a 20 yr old subdivision in Chatham County, NC. Census records show that this property was occupied since at least 1850. I have found old nails and horseshoes in the past. The hole opening in the "handle" is about 3/8" across. Any ideas on what this may be? Thank you!

First off, welcome to Tnet Rob.

Based on how the wire is bent, my first thought was fence wire, possibly from an electrified fence.
Hopefully, another member will recognize this style and be able to give you a more definite I.D.

Not easy to see inside the narrow opening, but yes, it appears to be threaded.
