Well this christmas my old lady finally broke down and bought me an MD which i've wanted for quite sometime now. Just to get out and enjoy nature. I just have a few questions for you all.

She ended up getting me the Bounty Hunter Pioneer 202 I believe it is from walmart which retails for around $198.00

Is this a decent first detector? It has depth detection and notching etc....

How often should I expect to find something. I plan on just doing the yard today after I wake up. I know a lot of it depends on the area but the area I live is rich with history and I can't wait to get started.

I was also thinking about going to the beaches of Lake Erie which is near to me. Just curious on your thoughts of finding stuff on Lake shore???

So to recap Is it a decent detector? Will I find anything on my first time out? Is Lake Erie a good place to look?

I can't comment on the BH I have a whites LDX pro. You got yourself a name brand detector and while not top of the line is fine for starting out. I mean if you find it boring or if you just plain hate it it is better to have $200 sitting in the closet than $800. First off don't believe the Whites commercials yeah you may git lucky first time out but for every ring you find there will be a Gazillion pulltabs. As far as the lake shore goes, one place is as good as another as long as there has been uman activity on the site.
And last How in the heck did you come up with Histoplasmosis for a handle? About 20 years ago my wife worked at a prison and did a lot of work in a loft area that was full of pigeon doodoo she had to be tested for it. That is about the first and only time I have heard that term.

Many people have started with the Bounty Hunter/ Discovery detectors and really enjoy using them. As for good? Well that's a matter of opinion and experience. Your finds will be relative to your amount of work and research in the hobby. Many th'ers go quite a while before finding their first good target. Don't get too discouraged if you find nothig but trash for a while, it happens to all of us. Good luck and HH! Chris

That was a very thoughtful of your lady. (i wish my lady was like that encourage me for what i like to try instead of discourage me) I heard a lot positive and negative about Bounty Hunter Detector. Although i have never use a detector and in a process of researching and getting one soon.

I agree with Chris. like with every hobby. it is easy to get discourage and give up.

I hope I don't get discourage because I don't know anybody here in Seattle to go detecting with. I am really anxious getting my first MD.

here is a good site for the MD guide to see where your detector stand. http://www.treasurehunterstradingpost.com/metal_detectors_buyers_guide.htm refer by charles.

Well thank you all for your insight. I did have fun with it my first time out. I've been researching sites in my city lately a lot. Now I just have to ask permission from the city and some other private places. Look forward to finding some more great stuff.

On my handle: Years ago I needed a player name for a massive online multiplayer space game called allegiance. I couldn't think of anything so I just popped open the medical dictionary randomly flipping to a page of disease and boom "histoplasmosis". It just sorty stuck to all of my online profiles since then.

Hey Histo: Congrats on the new MDer. If you have specific questions on your new Pioneer 202 (twin to the QuickDraw II), take a jaunt on over to the Bounty Hunter Forum at http://www.detecting.com and introduce yourself. The 202 is a good beginner/intermediate rig and many of the guys over at the BH forum use it with pretty darned good results. Happy hunting and full pouches to you! BBJ
