have been metal detecting seriously only this year and I have found some coins, pull-tabs, and normal stuff but twice now I have found 2 different blobs of metals in different towns. I will attach some pictures of these blobs. The silver blobs are light as aluminum but my Garrett Ace 250 reads it as a silver dollar. The darker blobs of metal always read as nickel on the scale. My question is do other people who do this more than me do they find blobs of metal all the time too?

Not so Odd actually... I sorta' find them in Spurts, but it's normally in Older areas where there used to be houses or Buildings of some sort. The 'Aluminum' Blobs are could be anything from a 'burned down house' to people throwing 'beer cans' into a campfire, but rest assured, we all find them at one time or another. The same goes for the 'Nickel-Like' material... Although it would ring up as nickel, it's likely some type of 'Pot Metal' and full of Zinc and under the right circumstances (same types of hot fires), it would likely melt and become 'porous' (like the one in your photos) due to escaping 'gasses' and what not.

Although usually found by mistake, Keep an eye out cause you never know when you might pick up a nice little meteorite! It would likely be VERY heavy for it's size and 'Non-Porous'.

Cheers,

I also found a few blobs. Generally they are lead which means they are smashed bullets most of the time. For aluminum I am not sure, guessing aluminum can scrap hit by a plow or something.

Aluminum cans in fire produce them.. The second looks like clinkers from burning coal for heat (the metal impurities)...

I often find super strong, silver ,non-magnetic blobs of metal beachside here in S. Florida from Brevard to Broward county. Have been told it is titanium from the space shuttle Challenger.

I've run into slag a few times. Sometimes areas that have been filled-in will have lots of slag in the fill material. The stuff signals up high on the conductivity scale.

Thanks for everyone s' help I do appreciate all of the input and I'm glad that others are finding blobs. Sorry about how big these pictures are I did not relies that they were that big.

I've found them along and around the rivers /waterways - some of it was some kind of solder- probably used in around the trains -they would be able the size of half dollar/ quarter. you never know what you'll find- but that kind of stuff is all over the place here in north eastern pa. at least your not alone! :icon_thumleft:

When I was a kid we used to go down to the train tracks near the river and gather these iron balls about the size of a marble laying along the tracks. Don't know what they were but they worked great in a slingshot.

I have found a lot of those in my yard. I have no idea what they are from. It is annoying b/c my detector goes off so much and it is these blobs and nothing good.

Metal blobs. Remember your detector won't tell you what isn't under it, Orpheus. Do you live in a high iron-smelting area? Are there lots of coal-burning stoves in your area today? I live near a lot of aluminum smelters which used to be common along the Columbia River. Never found an aluminum blob yet, but have seen several large aluminum ingots. Whatever you are finding are from nearby and probably are pretty common for the 2 towns you found them at.

Swanzie poses an interesting question, though. If near a railroad track, could be metallic aluminum left after thermite welding, used to join the rails together.

:hello:

I find blobs of metal all the time, lead, bronze, iron, aluminium...keep digging them, and one will be Gold :icon_thumleft:

The aluminum blobs I found on the beach had me confused until a young man collecting sea glass told me they are melted beer cans. Makes sense; there's a lot of drinking and bonfires going on at this beach.
