So I keep finding these mixed in with percussion flakes and pottery shards and charcoal. They are all roughly the same size and shape, they differ in color but are all flat and extremely smooth on at least one side. They stand out to me because they don't seem to occur in the normal makeup of the sand anywhere else around. infact there are almost no rocks and the ones there are aren't even the size of a dime and are usually some type of reddish sandstone. So are these anything? florida rocks 123.webp

I have lots of these type pieces I have saved because of the dip in the center. Most tell me they are natural, but I take that with a grain of salt. You know your hunting area better than any one. Take advice here as friendly "by the picture..." Type of advice. think about the advice, along with your observations and you decide. Here are a few with the dip, which, by the way, I think is a hafting scar, that I have. Some have a dip on one side and a "7" shaped scar on the other side. I'm not sure what these are and I could only find a couple tonight for examples.

The next piece would have been nice, compare it with the last two pieces!

One more piece with the dip like yours and signs of use, or attempted use.

I may have just posted a bunch of rocks. I'm not sure. Until someone convinces me that are rocks and nothing more, I'll keep them
In with house plants or some place. Don't toss your find until a person from your area checks it out.

my opinion is its just a creek stone . i find many in garbage middens here in the northeast(and in creeks :tongue3:).
Were they heated and dropped into pots to help boil its contents?or were some kids just tossing stones at each other and they ended up littering the village? in my neck of the woods some natives crushed up quarts and added it to there ceramics mixtures, i only mention this because you pictured the quartz( just a reason to bring it back to the village other then it was probably the only white rock in a sea of other creek stones). Is the sandstone naturally red or is it stained from being in a fire? between artifact hunting and and trying to figure out where and when your artifact fits in time its good to know what kind of materials are typical for your searching area. my questions are only rhetorical , just a few possibilities to think about.

Very well stated WVR. I couldnt of explained it better myself. Actually you saved me allot of typing.
