I know this is OT, but as far as I can see, it's not "Reale," it's "Real"

A bit of my OCD has been getting to me lately, so I wanted to check out the correct spelling of the denomination "reale."

The first thing that stumbled me was, if it's pronounced the way it's spelled, it would be a "ree-al-ay." And I've never heard anyone say that unless they were trying to fake Italian.

Second, looking at Spanish coins that have the denomination written, it's written as "real" (ree-al). So I'm not sure why the "e" would be added in the singular sense. Plural, of course is "reales" (ree-al-ays).

So, I would love some input showing the correct spelling as "reale."

Below are some pictures of 1/4 Real, 1/2 Real, and 1 Real.

Happy Hunting all!

I have been preaching the more proper usage of the correct terms for Spanish silver for years, but very hard for most to change what they have come to known as a Reale. The Spanish REAL is the denomination and plural of REAL is REALES.(When talking units of Spanish coinage) So you have a 1/4 Real, 1/2 Real, 1 Real, then multiples which make a REAL plural is 2 REALES, 4 REALES and 8 REALES. But common useage that prevails is what we see on forums and Facebook. REALE is not really a proper term for the Spanish silver..... :)

Ain't Don awesome?!?!

Thx Don, I knew of this real vs. Reale, but was confused myself... but it all makes sense now. Great explanation!

Nice finds! Thanks for sharing...

“pieces of eight” were measured in reales. Their denominations are 8 reales, 4 reales, 2 reales, 1 real, ½ real and ¼ real.

Thanks! It took me quite some time to find them...........on Google. They were not found metal detecting. Just used for illustrative purposes.

Well my friend you and I have tried to sway the masses but it's not easy. I have a book about Spanish silvers that spells it out quite plainly. I hope a lot of people see this post lol. I think people just have a hard time when it matches one of our words and they feel like it should be different.

We're trying Ahab! Hoping between the images, and the heavy-hitter members verifying it's "real" will get the knowledge across to a few others. I think you're right that finding a real does look a bit off when written. We'll keep on keeping on!

Just happy that somebody else is as OCD as me. Didn't think that was possible. But with me it's only words and things of that nature. Other things don't bother me a bit

Ahab8 pointed this out to me months ago... before then, even though I was reading "Real" and "Reales" when I did research, it just never clicked. Guess my eyes saw one thing and my brain processed it without paying close attention. Since Ahab8 pointed this out, I now give it the correct spelling where I drop the "e" for the singular. I won't word police it, but when I spell "real" it's important to me that I use it correctly. Hopefully more people catch on too.

That's a great find! And for the record, I will now correctly use the words 'Real' and 'Reales'. I tend to be a stickler for grammar and spelling, so I happily embrace any new information! [emoji16]

Thanks for calling it to attention!

Now get out there and bring us back a real Reale!
