In 1882 B.Wilson Smith & Co. in Lafayette Indiana were listed as School furniture makers.
Their address was 11N. Fifth Street.

Maybe it was a furniture tag for state-owned furniture (school desks) that were built by B. Wilson Smith & Co.

Perhaps, but a better bet was they took on a side line making dog tags or at least the number stamping as a contracted vendor for the city.
