Luminosity, layers, blend modes, channels ... (I try to stay away from "commercial filters" these days).
The effects you can get are fun and sometimes pretty nics.
A blue heron shot with an early Canon EOS Rebel (the one with the focus problem --- after about 10k shots, the link to the autofocus breaks and the repair is more expensive than the camera).
